DIY manicures are set to get a whole lot easier this summer thanks to a new app by Sally Hansen.
"Mini Match" will let users test out up to 200 of the brand's nail polish colours in real time, Women's Wear Daily (WWD) reports.
The app, which will be available for free for both iOS and Android, will also let users buy colours that catch their eye as well as share the different looks they test out online. The concept will also feature a skin tone analyser designed to provide recommendations to users.
Sally Hansen products will be tagged with the app icon in-store to encourage users of every age to test out the initiative.
"When you look at a market like the US, the consumer can't try on at shelf," Vice President of Global Digital at Coty Inc Kristen D'Arcy told WWD. "This will make her life easier."
Sally Hansen isn't the only cosmetics brand branching out into interactive beauty apps -- last year L'Oréal tested an augmented reality app that allowed users to try on its cosmetics before buying them. Titled "Makeup Genius", it uses the front camera on smartphones and tablets to turn devices into virtual mirrors, letting users try out fresh makeup looks in real time simply by holding the device in front of their face.
In fact, the concept of augmented reality technology appears to be going mainstream in beauty, with Modiface launching its "Modiface Mirror" earlier this year. The device lets users "try on" thousands of different cosmetics via 3D technology and live video and comes with a selection of lipsticks, eye colors, foundations and other goodies that can be switched, mixed and matched by touching the screen.
The live video aspect means users can zoom in to see the effects of each product, and the mirror also features a shade matching system to help pinpoint the exact right tones to suit each person's skin tone and colouring.
