Opening Ceremony theatre play

This season, we saw Ralph Lauren's innovative 4-D runway show, Opening Ceremony's theatre play starring Elle Fanning and the debut of Victoria Beckham footwear.

“September is the January of fashion”: this is one of the most used quotes in the fashion industry and New York Fashion Week (NYFW) has always been the one to kick off the seasonal fashion fiesta.

This season saw a massive revival of beautiful sportswear-inspired collections, including Alexander Wang, Proenza Schouler and Prabal Gurung, following up the past seasons of fashion week, where we spotted the rising trend.

In true New York fashion, we also witnessed some of the most innovative shows like Ralph Lauren’s four-dimensional waterfall runway at Central Park, a striking pink house in Marc Jacobs and a theatre play by Opening Ceremony.

Read through for the highlights of NYFW Spring/Summer 2015:

Ralph Lauren enters the 4th dimension
Instead of the conventional runway walk,  the house of Ralph Lauren truly embraced technology in fashion with an extravagant evening garden party where guests witnessed a runway show on a 60-foot wall of water. Held in Central Park, the brand went back to its polo roots and presented a collection inspired by the ever elite Hamptons with a touch of safari wilderness.

Sportswear is everywhere in New York
If there is anything we can pin New York with this season, it is the army of American sportswear collections that had stormed the runways. Three stood out the most amongst the others: Alexander Wang, Proenza Schouler and Prabal Gurung. The first did a collection inspired by the structural form of sports sneakers. From shoestrings to mesh panels and rubber soles, your running shoes never looked better until Alexander Wang did his run on it.

As for Proenza Schouler, the brand tweaked the staple American sportswear into a series of laser-cut dresses, crochet-seamed tops and hand-knitted polos. Over at Prabal Gurung, the designer took it to the Himalayan Mountains again but this time, it is the spring flair in Mother Nature with ruffles, cut-outs and lots of feathers.

Victoria Beckham makes a great shoemaker
As one of the most successful celebrity-turned fashion designers, Victoria Beckham has been wowing the industry and making headlines since her first presentation in 2009. For this fashion week, she made headlines again with the debut of her new shoe collection, featuring a range of loafers and chunky heels. Much to everyone's surprise, there were no sky-high pointy stilettos in sight, even though she has always been known for it. Nonetheless, it was a job well done by Mrs Beckham for breaking the mold and exceeding expectations.

Opening Ceremony acts out its collection
The conventional runway seemed to be the furthest thing in the mind of New York shows this season. Opening Ceremony is yet another label that reimagined the runway concept into something fresh – a theatre play and it was no regular show.  This play has a star-studded show cast including Dree Hemingway, Karlie Kloss and Elle Fanning – all dressed in the brand’s latest collection. That's not all, the play was written by Jonah Hill and Spike Jonez - truly making it a Broadway-worthy spectacle.

Marc Jacobs goes pink crazy
When it comes to show-stopping runway décor, no one can beat Marc Jacobs, who always bring a touch of whimsy and dark romanticism to his shows. This round, the iconic designer invited his guests to a pink room where a doorless and windowless house served as a backdrop for the runway – in pink, of course. As the models walked, guests were given Beats by Dr Dre headphones to listen to a computerized voice commentary on the army-inspired collection. After eight long days of fashion craze, this show was a perfect end to it all – in New York, that is.

Stay tuned as next week we will share with you the highlights of London Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2015.
