Having shouldered the responsibility of timekeeping at the Summer and Winter Olympic Games since 1932, Omega has shown it takes its role very seriously. Having used various technologies like false-start detection sensors, the photofinish camera, and swimming pool touchpads to make victories indisputable, Omega has also pioneered more reliable technology fit for the 21st century.

The electronic starter gun that made its debut at the 2010 Winter Olympics has taken huge steps to eliminate the shortcomings of the traditional starter gun and in similar vein, Omega will be improving on its existing technology for the 2016 Olympic Games taking place in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

The photoelectric timing system that accompanies the photofinish camera is receiving an upgrade to improve its already phenomenal system. First introduced in 1948, the system used a beam of light run back and forth along the finishing line that triggered a stopwatch as soon as the beam was broken. The system later evolved into using infrared beams, and this year Omega will be debuting the latest generation of this technology that is set to detect more body patterns as athletes cross the line, improving its accuracy beyond the 1/1000th of a second already achieved.

As it gets set to lug over 450 tonnes of equipment and 200km of cabling along with their 450 professional timekeepers, Omega is also releasing a series of watches for 2016 Olympic Games:
