Every year on April 7, World Health Day is celebrated under the sponsorship of World Health Organisation. This year, the Depression: Let's Talk campaign is set to raise awareness on one of the fastest growing health problems that's rarely talked about openly.
Despite being a legitimate mental illness, depression faces deep stigma worldwide. This is especially true in Asian culture and communities, hence many sufferers bear the illness silently, leading to much more serious outcomes such as self-harm and suicide, than if help was sought at an early stage of the condition.
There are many factors that contribute to the development of depression, such as significant life events including unemployment, bereavement and pregnancy. Physical health ailments can also lead to depression, for example being diagnosed with cancer or heart disease. In some cases, there does not appear to be a trigger event to cause a person to be depressed.
If you suspect that you or someone you know is depressed, these are main 3 signs to watch out for according to WHO – persistent sadness, loss of interest in activities that you normally enjoy and unable to perform daily tasks.
It is important to realise that depression can happen to anyone and that it can be treated by seeking help:
1. Reach out to a trusted friend or family member to talk things through
2. Keep connected and in touch with people instead of isolating yourself
3. Exercise, eat and sleep in a regular pattern
4. Avoid alcohol and drugs which will worsen the condition
5. Seek professional help
