4 Ways Beyond Meat Is Served At La Juiceria Superfoods Cafe And Super Saigon
Proving naysayers wrong, Ethan Brown and his Los Angeles-based company Beyond Meat have put plant-based meat substitutes on the culinary map, which extends to our shores. While the plant-based protein usually surfaces at small independent eateries at the start, it takes working with fast food chains for the product to truly proliferate.
In Malaysia, this task is being undertaken by LaJuiceria Superfoods Cafe and Super Saigon, two popular chain restaurants founded by Anabelle Co-Martinent.

As this is the first commercial Beyond Meat Burger that's being launched in Malaysia, both parties agreed that we wanted to do it justice by building a cohesive and flavourful combo that reminds our guests of the "flavour of meat
It was slightly over a year when Tatler Dining sprinted to Sushi Ryu to sample the first Beyond Meat Wagyu Katsu Sando in Malaysia. Given the rise of plant-based diets, however, we suspected it was only a matter of time before the alternative protein became more commonplace.
Sure enough, last week saw us sinking our teeth into an umami bomb of a burger laced with black truffles—and at no cost to the livestock industry.
"As this is the first commercial Beyond Meat Burger that's being launched in Malaysia, both parties agreed that we wanted to do it justice by building a cohesive and flavourful combo that reminds our guests of the 'flavour of meat'. We went with two flavour profiles known for their high umami level, teriyaki and truffles," comments Renyi Chin, co-founder of myBurgerLab.
Truffles also feature in La Juiceria's Beyond Poke Bowl, which is so sizeable that it had to be split into two meals, which is just as well—both the poke bowl and burger don't come cheap at RM49.90 each.
But a quick survey of the poke bowl's components shed light on its price: not one, but two types of grains/pseudo-cereals form the base of the bowl—turmeric-spiced Japanese pearl rice and crunchy quinoa—which are then garnished with a perfectly poached omega egg, tobiko fish roe, pickled radishes, vegetables and togarashi spice, not to mention a teriyaki-glazed Beyond Meat patty with a lattice of seaweed strips.

Meanwhile, Super Saigon, sister restaurant to La Juiceria, has found different ways of working Beyond Meat into its menu. Ample 'minced meat' is stirred into the Beyond Fried Rice and Beyond Dry Wok Kuey Teow, both of which deliver a nice kick of spice from the use of chilis or fresh ginger. Almost indistinguishable from their meaty counterparts, the aforementioned Asian dishes ace believability and affordability at RM29.90 per portion.
Available for delivery and dine-in, the Beyond Meat dishes have a limited run until December 13, 2020 or when stocks run out.
