Get the latest scoop on low-sugar, low-calorie and plant-based ice creams

Parallel to the rise of alternative milks on the market, we have recently seen a similar boom in the ice cream industry, with more health-conscious and dairy-free options occupying grocery shelves. Most of the local ones also come with whimsical flavour creations such as lychee blossom, mango sticky rice, and pandan gula Melaka.

If you want to satisfy your ice cream cravings with lighter, less dairy-heavy options from plant-based options to small-batch “less sweet” variations, here are a few of our favourite innovative ice cream brands.

1. OohLaLa Creamery

Oohlala Creamery’s pints are made from all-natural ingredients with reduced sugar–we’re talking a quarter of the sugar in traditional pints–and are packed with flavour. You might have seen its pints in eateries such as Agrain, La Juiceria, and more. Some of our favourite flavours include the mango sticky rice, 72 per cent Valrhona dark chocolate sea salt, and matcha and roasted rice mochi.

2. Softsrve

Founded in 2015, Softsrve is a small-batch ice cream that produces low-sugar pints and has since grown into its own ice cream parlour in Sea Park. At its parlour, you’ll enjoy its soft serve ice cream on its own or with other desserts such as waffles and parfaits. Our top flavour picks include vanilla cereal milk, smokey salted caramel, and its dairy-free onde onde. For those with a sweet tooth, go for the Berries on a Cloud waffle or What-A-Cin waffle.

3. Wolf Pints

Known for their low-calorie versions of ice cream that don’t skimp on flavour, Wolf Pints’ homemade ice creams are all made fresh to order. Their menu includes unique flavours such as chocolate cookie dough and sakura rose tea as well as locally inspired ones such as milk Lotus Biscoff and lychee blossom.

4. Kind Kones

With outlets in both Kuala Lumpur and Singapore, Kind Kones offers all-natural, plant-based ice creams and desserts that are also devoid of refined sugar and additives. You’ll encounter classic flavours such as mint chocolate chip and Madagascan vanilla bean, as well as other creative combinations such as watermelon strawberry mint, lychee and lime sorbet, and mango and raspberry swirl.

5. Kelava

A combination of the words kelapa and love, Kelava was founded by vegan duo Azlan and Aina. Using coconut as their ice cream base, Kelava’s offerings are plant-based without artificial dyes or flavours. Onde onde, salted gula Melaka, and wild berries are just some of their bestsellers.

6. IDC

Short for Ice Dreams Cafe, IDC in Damansara Kim has expanded into an online ice cream marketplace. Delivering throughout the Klang Valley, IDC carries ice cream from various brands including its own. IDC ice cream caters to those with dietary restrictions; the sugar-free range carries flavours such as Manuka honey dark chocolate flakes and Manuka honey lavender tea.

7. 88keto

88keto offers low-carb and low-sugar alternatives to breads, baked goods and ice creams. Its unique Ketococo collection is coconut-based and comes in various flavours such as chocolate coconut, chocolate mint, and peanut butter coconut.
