Lovers of the ‘good-old’ can still delight in the traditional, but the adventurous may want to try out some of these modern and inspired mooncake flavours.

While the Mid-Autumn Festival is steeped in tradition, the mooncake, the delicacy most associated with it has taken on a touch of modernity thanks to the creative hands of contemporary chefs.

Lovers of the ‘good-old’ can still delight in the lotus seed paste, red bean paste and assorted nuts that are traditionally found in mooncakes, but the adventurous may want to try out some of these modern and inspired mooncake flavours:

Imperial by Chynna

Chef Lam Hock Hin and Chef Ng Meng Loong at Hilton KL have released their signature mooncake for the year – Imperial by Chynna. The gold-dusted mooncake has a filling of figs around a Valrhona chocolate core. Visit their website to learn more about their durian mooncake too.

Mini Ping Pei Avocado Paste

Although Shangri-La KL has come out with 5 new flavours this year, and most of them are pretty interesting, the mini snow skin mooncake with Avocado Paste filling caught our eyes as a wonderful way for Mexico to meet China, in Malaysia. Learn about their four other modern flavours here.

Snow Skin Strawberry Truffle

Celestial Court at Sheraton Imperial KL also has some interesting flavours but it’s the snow skin white lotus paste mooncake with a strawberry and chocolate truffle core that gets the pick for mixing tradition and modernity in one package. Read more about how to customize your mooncake too.

Mini Snow Skin Pandan & Cheese

While many chefs are introducing ingredients unfamiliar to mooncakes, the brains at Mandarin Oriental have introduced ingredients that are unfamiliar to each other. The pandan and cheese mooncake has been championing this category for a while now. Make your orders here.

Mini Snow Skin Chocolate & Whisky

We’ve covered a range of sweet mooncakes and even a touch of savoury, but Tai Zi Heen at Pullman KLCC, is mixing dessert and drinks in one mini snow skin package with their chocolate and whisky mooncake; my personal favourite way to finish a meal. Make your order here.
