Thanks to McDonald's Singapore, the nasi lemak burger (NLB) craze has taken over local food dining_news headlines in the past few weeks.
Malaysian restaurants are now giving it a go to show the Golden Arches giant the proper way to translate our national food into a burger worthy of the Jalur Gemilang.
With NLB mania at its height, are locally-inspired novelty foods like it here to stay?
"It's a cycle, people want something different than what the big brands have," says Chin Renyi, myBurgerLab's co-founder. "McDonald's is available to the masses and it's affordable. If they didn't launch it, it wouldn't be so popular."
Chin notes that myBurgerLab had a nasi lemak burger recipe in their vault three years ago but didn't think it would be a hit with Malaysians until a high demand proved otherwise.
"We're creatures of comfort and a lot of the burgers we work with take flavours that we're used to and builds upon them with flavour pairings," explains Chin in regards to the sudden popularity of the NLB. "People are always looking for new things and we're no strangers to taking local tastes and pairing them with Western flavours."
The burger joint has always featured burgers with a local twist, such as the Bait & Switch that includes Kelantanese budu sauce, and recent addition Flaming Malt Kiss that includes condensed milk and Milo.
Launching August 4, myBurgerLab's Nasi Lemak Ayam Rendang Burger will be a tribute to national day this month.
Casual dining eatery Define:food also decided to give their own take on the NLB craze, taking inspiration from everyone's favourite neighbourhood nasi lemak aunty.
If Chin is right, we could be seeing more Malaysian-inspired burgers in the food scene in the near future.
Both myBurgerLab and Define:food's nasi lemak burger offerings are limited however, so be sure to pay them a visit to see what all the fuss is about.
