The nexus of nightlife activities in the early noughties, Jalan Doraisamy aka The Row lay derelict for years before undergoing rapid gentrification. One of the new kids on the block, Heritage Pizza is fast providing healthy competition to Pizzeria Dihyang parked no more than 100m away.

With exactly nine pizzas (not including one dessert pizza) and six supplementary toppings on their menu, Heritage Pizza allows regulars to experiment with endless permutations. It's interesting to note that for the first time in our lives, toppings—one in particular—take precedence over pizza flavours; a recognisable starlet in #foodporn, burrata can be served on the side or smack in the centre of your pizza.

Something must also be said for the service team's savvy familiarity with the menu. Not only did they school us on the subtleties of bresaola and culatello, but we also learned the proper pronunciation for 'nduja (ahn-doo-ja).

We first met Phillip Dominic, the affable head chef of 2OX, at a review of the French-Mediterranean bistro—this was exactly a year ago, when one thought nothing of splurging on a nice sit-down meal. Now that Covid-19 has made misers of us, Phil's Pizza is the place we pop by more often.

Technically one long corridor, this hole-in-the-wall pizzeria is small and unpretentious. When on Jalan Telawi 2, keep an eye out for an arrangement of chairs and tables in cheery sunflower yellow. Part of the charm of Phil's is having the luxury of mixing and matching individual slices—a popular practice in The Big Apple. "It's my take on New York-style pizza," elucidates Dominic. "The base is a mix of organic flour, wheat bran and semolina."

Though thinner than Neapolitan pizza, New York-style pizza should be sturdy enough to serve as a scaffolding for a wide selection of toppings, which in Phil's case, includes chicken chunks with a sweet-spicy splash of Lingham cili sos (Hot Wings) or perhaps smoked duck slices with cut pineapple (Pineapple Sugus).

Expansion is on the cards for Phil's Pizza, so interested investors are encouraged to get in touch with the team.

WOP @ Plaza Damas

STYLE: Neapolitan or Naples-style pizza
PRICE: Per pizza, RM26 - 49
LOCATION: Block H-0-8 and H-1-8, Plaza Damas (connected to Hartamas Shopping Centre), Sri Hartamas, Kuala Lumpur
HOURS: Daily, 11am - 10pm
SWEET OPTIONS: Tiramisu, Strawberry Nutella Pizza, Banana Nutella Pizza
STRENGTHS: Offers calzones for those who like their pizza toppings 'contained'
ORDER PICK-UP: Order via GrabFood

An acronym for 'wood oven pizza,' albeit a slightly ironic one (American Italians will tell you that they detest the term), WOP is a welcome addition to Hartamas. Those unfamiliar to the maze that is Plaza Damas may find themselves in the same spot where they first started out, so use Tray Cafe as a landmark and stray slightly farther on; WOP's facade in fire engine red will eventually pop out.

Characterised by 'leopard-spots' and a chewy consistency, WOP's Neapolitan pizzas have cultivated a loyal following since the establishment's earlier days in Shah Alam. Sticklers for tradition should opt for the Margherita or the Marinara, whereas thrill seekers might take a shining to the Spicy Shrimp Garlic or the Smoked Beef and Rocket.

Pizza aside, WOP serves slabs of focaccia with different mix-ins and a Caprese salad in the colours of the Italian flag.
