For those looking for reminders of homegrown flavours with a twist of modern flair, Chef Jimmy Wong of Yun House has cooked up not only an iconic, festive menu of old favourites, but treasured family recipes belonging to the chef himself.

Step into the Year Of The Rat with wholesome and sumptuous bites at Lai Po Heen. Shaped like the iconic Mandarin Oriental fan, the yee sang is coated with olive oil and blackcurrant plum dressing, and served with either salmon, abalone or tuna. Other offerings range from stir-fried glutinous rice with preserved duck to crispy prawns with lemon dressing, tropical fruit salsa and tobiko.

Deciding where to get some last minute treats for your relatives can be tricky when you're nowhere near any traditional Chinese bakehouses. Well, look no further, because the House of Fortune is opening its doors at The St Regis Kuala Lumpur; pre-order and takeaway homemade cookies, cakes and traditional nian gao (sweet sticky rice cake).

If you really want to amp up the 'wow' factor when visiting relatives, the hotel also offers festive cakes and pastries such as the Good Fortune Red Bowl, which sees lemongrass and mango pudding encased in a red chocolate bowl, and the Firecracker, essentially Valrhona Jivara 46% milk chocolate with apricots and more hidden surprises.

Not every Sofitel hotel under French hospitality group Accor SA houses a Chinese restaurant, making Sofitel Kuala Lumpur Damansara all the more unique. Wan Chun Ting's Lunar New Year menu is pretty unique, to boot. We especially enjoyed the roasted chicken with curry sauce and mantou on the Prosperity Menu.

Like Chef Wong Wing Yeuk's skills on the violin, the food at Shanghai Restaurant is a masterpiece. The yee sang, which is served with the chef's secret sauce, contains a variety of rich meats nicely contrasted by fresh fruit. Taking a Japanese-Peruvian spin on traditional Lunar New Year dishes, Nobu Kuala Lumpur's executive chef Philip Leong and his team have created new, unique dishes to welcome the new decade. Their Nobu Style Prosperity Platters are a refreshing take on the iconic yee sang: featuring fresh seafood and seasonal ingredients, a crisp seaweed cracker the size of the plate, as well as a homemade sour plum sauce. For their New Year Hot Pot "Nabemono" Nobu Style, this particular dish is inspired by 'Poon Choi'—where an abundance of prosperous ingredients are served with a flavoursome kombu and chicken stock based soup.

Taking inspiration from the dishes of Lunar New Year's past is the Chow Kit Kitchen of The Chow Kit, a quaint boutique hotel in the heart of Kuala Lumpur city that had only just recently opened its doors to the public in 2019. And while they do serve the iconic yee sang in their 2020 Chinese New Year menu, the rest of their dishes are a fusion of familiar flavours, both regional and not— making it a refreshingly modern twist on old favourites.
