Working—and creating—with artificial intelligence can be a boon to those who know how to use it

Though artificial intelligence (AI) has been used, studied and developed since the mid-20th century, the technology has only recently seen a rapid rise in interest from consumers and businesses alike. This is in part thanks to the emergence of OpenAI’s AI-powered chatbot ChatGPT that people are beginning to realise the power and potential of AI.

For artists, it has been argued that AI poses a threat to their job security and even creative originality. But a feature written by Marcus du Santoy of the University of Oxford poses the opinion that while AI can generate art, it cannot come up with fundamentally new ideas on its own. It can support and catalyse human creativity, especially when it is able to automate what we would consider mundane tasks. Case in point are the AI-powered apps below for anyone who wants to enhance their creativity and imagination.

Thoth

Singapore Gen.T honouree Chia Yee Hui is behind Thoth, an AI-powered platform that allows you to convert text transcripts into infographics in a heartbeat. The software can cut through heavy text and can turn pages of information into beautiful one-page visuals, making it easy for anyone to understand even the most complex of ideas. The AI does this by identifying key points in long texts and transforming them into graphics according to the colour and layout of the user’s choosing.

The idea for Thoth emerged from Chia’s work with her visual consultancy Idea Ink, which specialises in providing live visual summaries and interactive infographics.

Canva

2020 Gen.T honouree Melanie Perkins’ graphic design company Canva recently announced that it is harnessing AI through their new “Magic” tools. The unicorn company’s new Magic Design feature, for example, allows you to generate customisable designs for your presentation simply by uploading a reference image or writing a short description of your idea. Meanwhile, Magic Write can generate both long and short texts for copywriting, presentations and social media materials. And Magic Eraser can delete unwanted elements from photographs, making it a viable tool for beginners unfamiliar with photo-editing apps.

Colormind

Colour is arguably one of the most important aspects of design. Those looking to master their skill can look for guidance with Colormind, a colour scheme generator that utilises deep learning to analyse styles and schemes from photographs, movies and popular art. It can help with colour study and help users in producing original designs or artwork.
