The non-profit organisation aims to empower underprivileged children through sport and education
Malaysian squash legend Datuk Nicol David has launched the Nicol David Organisation (NDO) together with former professional Columbian squash player, Mariana de Reyes. The organisation seeks to train the next generation of squash talents in Malaysia with “Little Legends”, a subsidised after-school programme that provides squash training and English lessons to children aged eight to 12 from low to middle-income families.
“When I was five years old, I was given the greatest opportunity in my life. That was to play a sport, and my sport was squash,” says David during the organisation's launch ceremony at the Bukit Jalil Golf & Country Resort in Kuala Lumpur on June 2. “The opportunity changed my life forever, as it showed me the importance of hard work, dedication and humility.”
During the ceremony, the first 58 children who have been accepted into the programme were also present. The programme will span across five years, where the children will attend classes for squash and English twice a week for nine months each year.
