LTW Designworks founder Lim Hong Lian discusses his sources of inspiration as well as the art and furniture pieces he loves

Celebrating its 40th anniversary in 2020, homegrown firm LTW Designworks has grown exponentially from its humble beginnings, when founder Lim Hong Lian worked from his home office in its early years. Presently, the firm is staffed with over 100 employees with offices in Beijing, Shanghai, Milan and Singapore.

1. Poliform Ipanema armchair, from Space Furniture

“The sturdiness and spaciousness of this chair would fit well in any living or study area,” says Lim. The work of French designer JeanMarie Massaud, this black elm and leather seat is imbued with the laid-back vibe of the world-famous Ipanema beach in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

2. Sculpture in Victoria Park Residence by Dr Colin K Okashimo

The award-winning artist and landscape architect is renowned for his sculptures and landscape design, which are often inspired by organic forms. “Colin is an old friend of 40 years; his work features unexpected surprises that can enrich one’s life,” says Lim.

3. African masks and crafts from Odisha, India

“Traditional crafts are often a part of my design vocabulary,” shares Lim. “These feature bold and raw elements, which I believe inspired Pablo Picasso’s cubist works.” Lim has collected various handcrafted souvenirs from his travels, including pieces which he acquired in the state of Odisha in eastern India.

4. Poliform Nara coffee tables from Space Furniture

Boasting clean lines and a sturdy silhouette, these hickory walnut and black elm coffee tables were also designed by Massaud. “I’m attracted to its sculptural look—it’s a perfect side table for tea,” says Lim.

5. Artwork by Ma Zhan Chun

“This painting is the work of Ma Zhan Chun, a dear friend of 25 years,” shares Lim. “Ma’s a very talented artist of multi-media, but I particularly appreciate his abstract Chinese ink paintings with my personal interpretation of each piece.”

6. Edra Sherazade Daybed from Space Furniture

Combining form and function, this daybed by Francesco Binfare features Gellyfoam, a patented foam material created by Italian brand Edra that provides both style and comfort. It also features synthetic wadding and triangular cushions for optimal back support. “I like how it features Asian influences, designed in a style that’s modern and contemporary,” says Lim.
