Frank Rethmann, the company’s vice president for international sales, agrees. “Good design is certainly a basic requirement; in a globalised world with often interchangeable products, we offer the possibility of individuality, for customers with very different wishes for design and space.”

He adds: “Our qualities are not only characterised by high-light fastness and abrasion resistance. They offer high performance levels beyond that, [which include] stain protection, acoustic features and outdoor functionalities.”

1. Pick stain-resistant fabrics

Avoid the distress of ruining your beautiful new sofa with wine spills by opting for stain and water-resistant fabrics; these can be cleaned easily with water and soap. Poertner recommends Jabana, a suede-like fabric first launched in the 1990s; the synthetic-fibre fabric comes in over 60 colourways to match any design scheme.

Quips Poertner: “The worst thing that can happen to a brand-new sofa is spilling a glass of red wine. Everybody can relate to this, right? For many years we have been launching upholstery items that either don’t allow stains and fluids to penetrate the fabric at all or allow for easy stain removals—even red wine stains—with just water and a little soap. We show pictures and videos of the tests we performed in our brochures and on social media channels.”

2. Match furniture styles in open-concept rooms

As open-concept rooms continue to retain their popularity, there is a need to consider such home designs holistically. This makes collections such as Polo particularly useful.

“We started with the idea of creating a cosy sofa for the dining area. It allows the dining area to be furnished with different seating options while bridging the living area with sofas and armchairs in one design language,” shares Rethmann, adding that the collection also includes beds and bedside tables.

3. Apply fabrics to your walls for sound dampening effects

Think outside the box for creative and tactile uses of textiles in your home. Poertner suggests installing fabric wall panels in your bedrooms: “Use an upholstery fabric with high acoustic functions as a wall covering to create a comfortable and cosy ambience.”

4. Look to nature for inspiration

Poertner notes that printed fabrics with poetic sights of nature will continue to retain their popularity, along with durable outdoor fabrics, as well as textiles made from high-quality, sustainable natural materials.

Among the eco-conscious finds from Jab Anstoetz is Climatex, which comprises textiles crafted with natural fibres and synthetic yarn. “The yarns can be separated after use, whilst the natural fibres are composted and the synthetic fibres are recycled for a new production cycle,” he says.

5. Shop wisely

Rather than opt for a “buy and throw” mentality, making thoughtful purchase decisions will also contribute to a more eco-conscious home; pick pieces that last and will stand the test of time.

Rethman counts the Inspiration sofa from Jab Anstoetz among the kid-friendly and yet timeless pieces in his abode. “One of my favourites is certainly Inspiration, which also graces my living room at home and in which we, my wife and our three children, have lived for many years and with which the children are growing up. Even after many years of intensive use—the children sometimes like to use the sofa as a trampoline—the furniture still shines in perfect splendour and the comfort is like on its first day [of purchase]!”
