Designed by Hokkaido-born architect Sou Fujimoto, the Not A Hotel flagship is a solitary villa of 9,900 sqm, with four bedrooms, a private garden, an infinity pool, an underwater sauna, a full gym, as well as an open plan living and dining areas with an oceanic panorama.

Known for his delicate architecture and structures of permeable enclosures, Fujimoto’s design ideas often tackle the relationship between the functions of an architectural space and its contribution to human behaviour. His distinctive residential structures and innovative institutional projects of recent include the House of Hungarian Music in Budapest, Hungary, and the 2013 Serpentine Pavilion Gallery in London.

For Not A Hotel’s Ishigaki Earth, Fujimoto merged elements of human ingenuity with the natural surroundings to offer an immersive and luxurious experience of life on Ishigaki Island.

The amalgamation was noticeable right off the bat with the circular exterior and a concave rooftop design that blended with the lush surroundings. At the bottom of the sloped architecture amidst the greenery sat an exclusive courtyard pool for the kids, and a fireplace perfect for temporary residents of the villa to gather around a warm fire under starry night skies.

Underneath the meadow-topped roof on the sea-facing side of the property was an infinity pool strategically positioned to take in the breathtaking vista of the ocean that bathed the property in golden hues during sunset.

The boundless expanse flowed from the pool into the coastal pied-à-terre too, where the inside-outside concept continued into the sweeping space that accommodates up to ten guests.

Situated right beneath the infinity pool, the underwater sauna borrowed natural light that streamed through the skylight, illuminating the curve-edged space as if being inside a submarine. The sauna room was also equipped with two showers, a cold plunge pool, and glass doors that led to an outdoor bathing area.

Drawing inspiration from the tactile textures of prehistoric caves, Fujimoto used textured Mortex coating material on the walls and ceilings to harness a relaxing ambience inside the holiday home.

The minimalist and neutral-toned furnishing, while coinciding with the hues of the natural landscape, was more an adjunct than competing with the unobstructed view.

With the ocean-facing side of the property fitted with edge-to-edge glass as windows, this allowed natural light into the master bedroom. The waterside bedroom was also equipped with tablets on each side of the bed, a standard feature in all Not A Hotel properties that allowed complete control of the villa’s lighting, blinds and air conditioning.
