OSKLO breathes new life to the Hollywood Regency style home that once belonged to actor Michael York

Following American architect John Elgin Woolf’s success for his majestic builds for the wealthy and famous in the 1950s, many Hollywood builders of the same era imitated his style that is known today as Hollywood Regency.

Featuring the typical design notes of “Pullman doors” for the front entry, leaded oval glass windows, mansard roof lines and Doric columns, Woolf has designed homes for Hollywood celebrities of yesteryear, such as Judy Garland, Katharine Hepburn and Cary Grant.

Woolf’s portfolio also included this property located on a promontory above the Sunset Strip that once belonged to actor Michael York, and his wife Pat York, a former Vogue photographer and Glamour photographer and travel editor.

After living there for almost five decades, it was sold to Joe and Davana Fryzer, a father-and-daughter duo familiar with the Studio OSKLO aesthetic, and engaged with them to carry out a glamorous remodel to this architecturally significant home.

“We felt we could make the house the best version it’s been to date, and preserve this incredible architecture at least for another generation,” said Arya and Michael Martin, founders of the LA-based interior design firm and development company that specialises in luxury residential properties and select client projects.

Positioned in the prestigious neighbourhood adjacent to Beverly Hills, along a street that has been graced by the presence of iconic figures like Elizabeth Taylor, Jane Fonda, and Richard Gere, the single-storey home spans a little over 5,000 sq ft and boasts an impressive 11-foot-high ceiling in its main areas.

The large primary suite comes with a secondary master bedroom, and a spacious terrace with unparalleled views of the Los Angeles skyline from Santa Monica to Griffith Park; to which the duo add: “The view from the property tells a story of Los Angeles each time you see it: stormy days tell an ominous tale, and sunny days make you believe in Hollywood dreams.”

There are also three guest bedrooms with their own ensuites and closets, as well as a powder bath.

“We tried to preserve the overall character of the structure, with its robust ceiling heights and traditional exterior, while opening up the interior with natural light, modern surfaces and a floor plan that lends itself well to entertaining on a larger scale,” the Martins elaborate.

“We very much liked the original structure, making it easier to make more daring design choices, like a step-down dining room, a cosy TV room conducive to more intimate entertaining, and a more communal kitchen—Davana’s favourite room in the house, since you have views to the ocean, an oversized island and easy access to the outside.”

They also add: “While we have design autonomy on most of our project, Davana was able to add design details and layers that we had not thought of originally. It ended up being a fun and fulfilling working relationship that resulted in the best possible product.”

The aesthetically pleasing limestone hardscape façade leads into the full-time home through Pullman doors synonymous with Woolf’s design, where a centrepiece under a circular skylight in the foyer opens into a cosy yet refined oasis that gives off the feeling of living a Hollywood dream.

“Every time we design a home, we like to make sure it is curated with cultural influence through all aspects, including lighting fixtures, artwork, decor and iconic furniture pieces,” explain the Studio OSKLO duo.

“For this home, we were inspired by our recent European travels, and we incorporate elements that reflect contemporary designs with antique accents to have the home appear timeless.”

In creating a feeling of curated luxury that is also welcoming and comfortable, the studio incorporates a very neutral palette with black accents alongside the combination of natural stone, light oak finishes, and luxurious and soft textural fabrics.

Neutral earth tones of rich taupe, ivories, terracotta and deep greens, and sheepskin and boucle create a cosy environment. Fabric and plaster light fixtures provide extra warmth, apace with the light oak wood cabinetry and flooring, juxtaposing with the polished nickel plumbing trims, and rubbed oil bronze door hardwares.

Enhancing the space with their luxurious appeal are luxurious velvet and mohair, and a diverse, natural-veined marbles for the countertop and backsplash in the kitchen, the fireplaces in the living and TV rooms, and the shower and counter in bathrooms.
