Ippo experimented with classic black-and-white theme for this luxury home in Kuala Lumpur.

Yin and yang; feminine and masculine. These two contrasting forces of energy can often complement each other to form a harmonious whole. While monochrome designs provide a clean look that many adore, the challenge lies in striking the perfect balance between these two stark contrasts to ensure one does not overpower the other.

Nestled within the gated Broadleaf Residences @ HomeTree, the Meadow M2 is a testament to modern interior design: innovative and functional designs that create what Danny Kua, the founder of Ippo, describes as a perfect balance in between. This semi-detached unit of 4,790 sq ft is a great example of how you don’t need to compromise style for practicality.

The play between light and dark inspired the design concept for the Meadow M2. While it might sound deceptively simple on the surface, Kua comments that the intentional design choices made in line with the theme allow Ippo to create a dramatic ambience throughout the house with just these two colours.

But to ensure that neither strong colour overpowered the other, a selection of earthy hues was also incorporated into their selection of materials. “The natural wood accents that are incorporated throughout the house help to give it a touch of organic warmth while still keeping it modern,” notes Kua.

Under the sweltering heat of the Malaysian sun, louvred panelling in the outdoor patio allows for moderate airflow while blocking out the elements, making it great for lounging around on cooler days or entertaining guests during small outdoor parties.

In the living room, the double-height ceiling provides excellent natural light and extends the living room space even further. The light also helps to provide enough negative space for the black walls and cabinetry to feel compact without being gloomy.

When asked about his favourite feature of this particular project, Kua highlights the kitchen: “The biggest transformation for the house took place in the kitchen. We loved being able to take this functional area and turn it into a contemporary masterpiece that looks great while still being practical.”

Sleek and reminiscent of your favourite bar on a Friday night, the pendant lights and strip lights inlaid along the built-in kitchen cabinetry give the space a cosy, warm glow, creating the perfect space for slow mornings or a chilly drink with company.

Meanwhile upstairs, the bedrooms are furnished similarly to the kitchen, where wooden flooring gives the room a gentler ambience suited for relaxation. To avoid any distracting clutter, the built-in wardrobes help to keep the space efficiently tidy, the black allowing it to blend in seamlessly with the rest of its surroundings.

Despite some of the challenges faced in balancing aesthetics and functionality, Kua and his team were able to achieve the best of both worlds through open communication and collaboration.

“We’ve always believed in the transformative power of thoughtful design, so it was great to be able to strike a balance between our creative process and the client’s requests to provide them with this beautiful space to create unforgettable moments in,” concludes Kua.
