A whimsical home for a young professional expresses her personality and love for colour

A home should always express its owner’s personality, and for this young professional, her home is a distillation of her love for boho chic aesthetics and vibrant colours.

So she turned to Moxie, an award-winning interior design studio based in Desa Park City, Kuala Lumpur, to execute this vision with refinement.

By coincidence, the apartment was also located in Southbrooks Residence, a new neighbourhood in Desa Park City. Basic kitchen cabinets and sanitary fittings were part of the apartment fit-out, so Moxie was brought in to undertake the renovation.

This would include revamping a new kitchen, introducing build-in furniture to match the owner’s needs, repainting, new plaster ceiling works, and completing the house to complement the furniture and décors.

“The home is beautifully situated with a large landscape from the balcony and belongs to a young bachelorette lady who owns a mini-sized dog. We got to know her through her previous employment with a company that we pitched for an office project,” recalls Cayenne Lim, co-founder and principal of Moxie.

“We loved how she is very down to earth, willing to explore, and allowed us so much freedom to work around the design.”

The designers extensively used bohemian themes, like rattan, arched forms, and vibrant colours: “We decided to go with an overall concept of boho chic through the carefully prepared concept board. A theme that closely reflects the homeowner’s personality and her favourite aspects of her home.”

Cabinetry works consisted of a spray-painted finish with a mix of rattan. The surfaces were kept matte for a cleaner effect, while customised wall-covering was used in the master bathroom to infuse an effortless chic to the space.

The arch motif adds softness throughout the home and is realised in various ways—from built-ins in the living room to the door frame of the cabinets and even painted as a backdrop for the TV console.

Rattan furniture pieces were favoured for a relaxed but crafted effect. The sofa was sourced locally in Malaysia, with dining hanging lights from Kare, Ruma Funiture, Rottan Lot and many more local stores. All the art pieces are from the client’s collections.

“We loved using diverse colours and forms in the living and kitchen while maintaining its reflection on three sides. It makes these aspects ideal for conversations,” concludes Lim.

Indeed the bold use of colour and form sets this small but curated home apart and unsurprisingly, the client is thrilled with the results.
