Malaysia Day provides the ultimate backdrop to unite art lovers together over thought-provoking exhibitions and short film screenings this September.

1. A Few Malaysia(s)

With this cleverly interactive art piece, triptych artist Sean Lean invites spectators to go beyond observing and actually contribute to the display.

The metal rack at the bottom of the triptych is where audiences can hang red and white clothing or fabric to complete the image of the Malaysian flag. A Few Malaysia(s) is featured alongside the work of other established Malaysian artists at the National Visual Arts Gallery.

2. Y Canvas

Inspired by emerging artists from the oft-misunderstood ‘Generation Y’, Y Canvas is an innovative group exhibition that investigates the content and production of knowledge in the Malaysian contemporary art scene.

Four artists will showcase their brave new works at this Core Design Gallery art exhibition, namely Haafiz Shahimi, Anisa Abdullah, Nor Tijan Firdaus and Haslin Ismail.    

3. Tun Dr Mahathir, A Forever LEGACY

Held at Westminster International College in Subang Jaya, this art exhibition features the work of artists from over 40 countries.

Deemed a collective world tribute to Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad and Tun Dr Siti Hasmah, the launch of the exhibition itself on August 12 at Perdana University was attended by the prime minister himself and his wife.

Award-winning Malaysian photographer Kenny Loh offers a visual rediscovery of Malaysia with this captivating photography exhibition co-presented by KSK Land.

Happening at the 8 Conlay sales gallery at Bangunan KSK, this free-admission exhibition features highlights from Kenny’s previously published works ‘Born in Malaysia’ and ‘A Story of Kuala Lumpur’, a series of images mirroring what it means to be truly Malaysian against the colourful backdrop of Kuala Lumpur.

6. Malaysian Citizenship

September 6-29, 2018

Japanese artist Kentaro Hiroki lived and worked in Thailand for over a decade, studying the Southeast Asian culture and identity and all their complexities. He spent a year in Malaysia researching everything from Malaysia’s National Archive to flea-markets to understand the nation’s history and other points that have shaped the Malaysian identity.

This exhibition at A+ Works of Art is the result of Kentaro’s ‘reproduction’ of Malaysian citizenship, a thought-provoking spectacle of the overlooked symbolic objects that bear such weighty significance.

7. Yang Lain-Lain

The spirit of street art is captured on canvas with Sabah-born artist Donald Abraham’s first solo exhibition at Suma Orientalis.

Drawing from his fascination with the world of hip-hop, rap music and street culture, this lively series of work culminated from a six year-period is available to the public daily except on Tuesdays and public holidays.

8. Liku Liku

Multi-disciplinarian Malaysian artist Nicholas Choong and University Teknology Mara graduate Hafiz Azizi have combined their creative instincts into one moving art exhibition at National Art Gallery.

Despite their different techniques and individual styles, both artists capture the bustle of city life and the tensions of urban living today.   

9. The Art of Printmaking: Lasting Impressions

10. Nusantara

Don’t miss this showcase of two short films by Sherman Ong at Apotheca (a demarcated space for thought-provoking art at Suma Orientalis gallery).

The first is titled ‘I Want to Remember’, hailing back to a time when two countries were one before separating in 1965; the second, ‘The Warm Breeze of Winter’ suggests a future in which Malaysia and Singapore remerge.
