This romantic comedy film follows New Yorker Rachel Chu (Constance Wu) as she accompanies her longtime boyfriend, Nick Young (Henry Golding), to his best friend’s wedding in Singapore, not realising that Young is actually the scion of one of the country's wealthiest families and a highly eligible bachelor.

Adapted from Malaysian author Yangsze Choo's novel of the same name, it was Netflix's first Mandarin original series. Directed by Malaysians Ho Yuhang and Quek Shio Chuan, the series takes place in Melaka during the 1890s where Li Lan finds herself linked to the afterworld after receiving a proposal to become the ghost bride to the deceased son of a wealthy family.

The action-packed 2008 Hong Kong martial arts film based on the legendary Ip Man stars the Donnie Yen in the title role. Ip Man finds himself in the chaos of the Japanese invasion of China and must find a way to survive. If you like it, then catch the two sequels, which are also on Netflix.

The heartbreaking story of Jiangqing (Jing Boran) and Xiaoxiao (Zhou Dongyu) who meet on train and instantly form a bond until the pressures of the big city catch up to them and threaten to pull them apart. The movie is the directorial debut of renowned Taiwanese singer-actress Rene Liu.

5/6 The Wandering Earth

 

China's third highest-grossing film of all time, The Wandering Earth is loosely based on a novella by China's first Hugo Award winner, Liu Cixin. The story follows a looming collision with Jupiter with Earth, and the fate of the latter lies in the hands of a few unexpected heroes.
