1/6 For deep learning: Coursera

Have you ever wondered what machine learning entails, or pondered on the history of typography? You can delve into these topics at Coursera.

Coursera is an American online learning platform that offers many open online courses (MOOC), specialisations and degrees. Courses available here include engineering, data science, mathematics, business, medicine and social sciences, hosted by partner universities such as Stanford University, University of Pennsylvania and Imperial College London, as well as companies like Google and IBM.

These courses provide quizzes, weekly exercises, peer-graded assignments, and sometimes a final project or exam. Courses are also provided on-demand, in which case users can take their time in completing the course.

Note: Coursera courses are free to audit but if you want to access graded assignments or earn a course certificate, you will need to pay a fee.

Like Coursera, EdX hosts online university-level courses in a wide range of disciplines to a worldwide student body. Home to more than 20 million learners, EdX aims to transform traditional education by removing the barriers of cost, location and access.

Created by The Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Harvard University, EdX currently has a catalogue of more than 2,650 online courses created for the masses. Through this platform, you can learn a variety of subjects from modern American poetry to Chinese history and culture.

Note: EdX courses are free to audit (i.e. watch videos and join discussions) for a limited period, but if you want unlimited access and earn a course certificate, you will need to pay a fee.

3/6 For professional growth: LinkedIn Learning

For those who just wants to expand existing skills vertically, look no further than LinkedIn Learning. Available courses covers business and technology. There also courses on professional skill upgrades like basic classes on impromptu speaking, influencer marketing and mobile app development.

Most courses include quizzes, exercise files, templates and other supporting documents to help you apply your knowledge into practical training. LinkedIn Learning also offer specific learning paths to guide you through helpful courses if you want to explore a new field or industry.

Note: A free one month trial is available to those with a LinkedIn profile, after which a monthly or annual fee is required.

4/6 For creative enhancement: Skillshare

Open-learning platform Skillshare is offering courses to nurture your creativity as well as enrich your business goals. Examples of course categories include leadership, marketing, productivity, graphic design, culinary arts, languages, and wellness.

Notable past instructors are often familiar names in the self-development circles such as Seth Godin, Guy Kawasaki and Gary Vaynerchuk.

While its classes aren’t academically accredited, Skillshare is focused on practical application and often has a project in its course that offers practical experience and the opportunity to receive feedback.

Note: There are free classes but premium classes are only available with monthly or annual subscription.

5/6 For learning from industry leaders: MasterClass

Star instructors take the spotlight at MasterClass, with notable names like legendary Vogue editor Anna Wintour, music producer Timbaland, celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay, photographer Annie Leibowitz and scientist Neil Degrasse Tyson conducting online classes with masterful production and videography.

Each class has video lessons, exercises, workbooks, and interview sessions with the instructor. A typical class has about 10–25 video lessons that are two to five hours long. While these instructors are not qualified academics, they offer useful insights into succeeding in their respective fields, serving as a virtual mentor.

Like LinkedIn Learning and Skillshare, Udemy also offers educational and skill learning in its platform. However, it has a huge following worldwide for its offering of recreational learning such as music and language.

Through Udemy, you can sign up to master various skills such as foreign language or piano playing.
