All dentist-related phobias were quashed, as Dr Mike Lim of the elite Blanc Dental Clinic in Bangsar Village subjected our pearly whites to a new, non-invasive alternative to scaling.

Paying the dentist a visit can be a very daunting experience. The moment the aroma of eugenol – clove oil used mainly in fillings – hits your nose, and the screeching sound of teeth scaling crawls into your ears, anxiety goes into overdrive, joining a milieu of tensions in the waiting room.

When I stepped into Blanc Dental Clinic, these impressions departed. The first thing that caught my eye was a feature wall of soothing greens, anchoring a pleasantly yellow-lit, multi-textured interior that was more spa than clinic. A smiling receptionist registered me, made small talk and offered a cup of hot tea.

Getting comfortable

By the time I’d settled into the dental chair of Dr Mike Lim, I was properly relaxed and ready to try the innovative Airflow spa, promising a superior and more pleasant scaling procedure.

Dr Mike emanated a soothing presence, through his gregarious personality and a million-dollar smile. As a pair of nurses prepped me for the session, the resident family and cosmetic dentist walked me through Blanc Dental’s core values as a holistic dental practitioner. “We look at the whole set of teeth from a preventive dentistry angle,” he explained. “We familiarise with our client’s lifestyle and find ways to help enhance their confidence through beautiful teeth.”

The clinic also offers specialist treatments, from orthodontist to oral and maxillofacial surgery, to endodontics.

Airflow Spa: scaling, rejuvenated

The name says it all and lived up to its promise, and Dr Mike kept me involved every step of the way. Led by a Guided Biofilm Therapy, the session started with a diagnosis, as the meticulous doctor established my unique dental issues before moving onto the next step. A Disclosing Agent was applied on my teeth, and the dye picked up every trace of my dental issues. Dr Mike even shot close-up images of concern areas and clued me in on how the high-tech Airflow powder, and its finer texture, would nip these problems in the bud, without eroding dentin and enamel like conventional scaling does.

The Airflow procedure commenced: Dr Mike deftly maneuvered my naturally small jaw, cleaning, polishing and removing stains and biofilm – the culprit of all dental problems. Dr Mike would alert me of any impending pressure, but other than that, I had to consciously stay awake amidst the relaxing session, lest my jaw clamped down on his hands and the whirring instruments.

For a shortcut to scaling, the painless process and the device emanating a soothing hum was a luxury

For more serious subgingival problems – tartar below the gum – an extra step of Perioflow gently extricates soft plague, to ease the following cleaning step, which is scaling. After around 40 minutes of Airflow, Dr Mike capped the session with a speedy 20 minutes of scaling to remove the tougher remnants of plague and tartar.

Basking in the after-glow

An hour of gentle Airflow Spa later, it was hard to believe every crevice of my teeth was cleaned, minus the pain! “We want our patients to experience a comfortable treatment process and remove the pain factor as much as possible,” Dr Mike iterated. He eagerly showed me a before and after comparison of his handiwork. I was thrilled by the results, which in turn motivated me to care for my dental health and its maintenance.

Aside from a thorough clean, Airflow offers a preventive solution to conditions like gingivitis, tooth decay and bad breath.

Airflow improves the longevity of dental prosthesis and implants, and preserves cosmetic teeth whitening, too

Before Dr Mike let me off, he reminded me of proper home oral care with a quick flossing and teeth-brushing demo (circular, at an angle). “Depending on individual dental health, a followup Airflow Spa varies between 3 months to 1 year,” he said. “In the meantime, stick to this home routine to keep teeth and gums healthy.”
