Earth Hour is the best time to stage a vigil with mindful and energy-saving activities that are fun to do in the dark and extra meaningful too.

Finding light in the dark – let this be your guide during the 1 hour of darkness of Earth Hour. From 8.30-9.30pm, lights will go off in a global sustainability movement against climate change. Make this symbolic hour a memorable one: gather your nearest and dearest and pass the time with a host of entertainment and events. From themed Earth Hour events and candlelit treats to good ol' nighttime activities, here are Earth Hour-aligned things to do that are best experienced with the lights off.

1. Dine In The Dark

No blindfold is needed for this tastebud-stimulating experience – at Dining In The Dark, diners tune out their sight and let taste, sound, and scent guide them through their meal. It’s unnerving at first, but in no time, you’ll be amazed at what your senses can do to heighten the element of surprise, all in the name of food.

2. Break Out The Au-Naturale Bath Bomb

Turn Earth Hour into me-time by allowing yourself a long soak in the bath. Light some scented candles and break out an all-natural, package-free Lush bath bomb to fizzle up the water and deliver good-for-you ingredients that linger long after the lights turn on.

3. Throw A Chocolate Tasting Party

Riding on the same note as Dining In The Dark – but much more mood-boosting, might we add – is chocolate tasting. Put together a chocolate 'pot luck' party or pick up one of these gourmet chocolate brands – some which hark of Asian nuances. Lay them out buffet style, and gather fellow chocoholics for a few rounds of 'guess the flavours'.

4. Be Still & Meditate

The darkness couldn’t make a more apt setting to find inner peace. Fluff up a pillow, put on some aromatherapy and find yourself in a comfortable seated position for an hour of meditation. Lena Franklin, an established psychotherapist, dispenses tips to establish a practical meditation ritual.

5. Connect With Mother Nature

If you’ve got time to spare and intend to connect fully with nature, make a trip to the eco-resort, Tanah Aina Fahad in Raub. The sounds of cascading waterfalls and humming rivers is a natural orchestra befitting of Earth Hour. If star-gazing is in your books though, the best place to be is glamping resort Tiarasa Escapes, where a nightly ritual of bonfire lighting is held under a twinkling night sky.

In an age where social media is used to make one’s presence felt, Earth Hour is a good excuse to unplug and switch off from Facebook and Instagram. Start small with 1 hour, and if you’re serious about making it a habit, take a leaf out of social media maven Jenn Low’s digital detox tips, or Tribe boxing studio’s Mark Choo on turning off his phone.
