While many observers report weight loss after fasting, the practice also has been found to bring about health benefits.

From ancient Hinduism to Judaism, Islam and Christianity; fasting has been a common practice amongst most religions because it teaches self-control and strengthens spiritual beliefs.

Did you know many forms of fasting have also gained popularity in the last five years?

For example the 5:2—eating normally for 5 days of the week, and fasting for 2; the self-explanatory Alternate Day Fasting; or the 20:4 and 16:8 fasts which correspond to the number of hours of the day fasted and eating windows.

Many observers report weight loss after this time, but did you also know that fasting has been found to bring about these following health benefits*?

1. Lower blood pressure

Studies have shown that blood pressure, an important marker of heart health, can drop up to 10% during periods of fasting.

2. Diabetes therapy

The pancreas which produces insulin appears to regenerate and repair itself with fasting, reversing the symptoms of diabetes.

3. Protection against certain cancers

Reduction in a certain hormone level after fasting lowers the risk of colorectal cancers, breast cancers and prostate cancers.

4. Slows down the ageing process

It has been observed that when our bodies do not have access to food, they switch from ‘growth’ mode to ‘repair’ mode. The number of repair genes get switched on and is more conducive to healthy ageing.
