Body scrubs, bath salts and soaks; if you miss hitting the spa as much as I do right now, splurging on bath and body care items online is more often than not the next best thing. With some creativity and effort, though, you can make your own home spa essentials using common, inexpensive ingredients like flour, sugar, baking soda and essential oils. From homemade scented body powder to sugar lip scrub, try these five fun recipes from around the web at home during lockdown.

1/5 Watch: Peppermint foot scrub

Did you know that a hot foot soak can help relieve headaches? There's nothing like the feeling of soaking tired, achy feet in a warm, aromatic bath after a long walk or hike as well. Try out this simple tutorial for your own exfoliating peppermint foot scrub: great for easing dry, cracked heels.

Ingredients

A mason jar or container

½ cup of pink Himalayan salt

¼ cup of coconut oil, carrier oil or olive oil

Peppermint essential oil (you can use other scents if you don't have peppermint)

Directions

Combine the salt and oil in a bowl. Add 20 to 30 drops of peppermint essential oil. Stir the mixture together until well combined and store it in a jar.

Tip: Place about tablespoon of the peppermint foot scrub in tub of hot water and soak your feet for about 20 minutes, adding in water to maintain the heat. Then, take another tablespoon of scrub and rub it over your feet to gently exfoliate dry, flaky areas.

This bath soak recipe from beauty blogger WholeElise makes for a delightful addition to your bathroom shelf – you can even place the mixture in decorative mason jars and present them to friends as inexpensive birthday gifts.

Ingredients

½ cup of Epsom salts

¼ Himalayan pink salt

¼ of magnesium flakes (if available)

Essential oil blend of orange, lavender, vanilla and frankincense (or any other essential oil of your choice)

Optional: Dried rose petals, dried rosemary, peppermint or thyme for decoration

Directions

Combine the Epsom salts, Himalayan pink salt and magnesium flakes in a large bowl and mix well. Add 20 drop of the essential oil blend and stir thoroughly until the oil is evenly distributed into the salts. If you'd like, mix in the dried flowers or herbs, as these will add both scent and a pretty aesthetic to the mixture. Place the bath salts in an air-tight container and store in a cool place away from sunlight.

For those hot and sweaty afternoons at home, a spritz or two of lightly fragranced face mist can do wonders. A 'cool' tip from DIY skincare blog Hello Glow: placing your face mist in the fridge will produce an even more cooling effect on your face and neck. This delightful face mist recipe from Hello Glow also doubles as a toner, which reduces oil production and helps remove makeup residue after cleansing.

Ingredients

2 tbsp of alcohol-free witch hazel extract

1 tsp of aloe vera gel

A 60ml spray bottle

Directions

Place the tablespoons of witch hazel into the spray bottle and add the aloe vera gel. Shake well to combine the two ingredients before each use. Store it in the fridge and use it up within one to two weeks.

4/5 Watch: 'Lip balm' sugar scrub

Video: Mother Nature Network/YouTube

I love the fact that one of the lip scrub variations in this video by Mother Nature Network includes a great way to incorporate your unused lip balms in a simple, exfoliating concoction that is gentle on the skin.

Ingredients

A tube of lip balm

2 tsp of course or granulated white sugar

1 tsp of coconut oil

Directions

Using the back of a spoon, mash up the lip balm stick in a bowl and add the white sugar. Mix well into a granulated paste. Stir in the coconut oil and mix. If the consistency of the paste is too watery for your liking, add in more sugar to stiffen it up. Apply a generous layer on your lips and massage gently before rinsing it off with warm water.

Ingredients

1 cup of fine rice flour (you can also use oat flour, tapioca powder, arrow root powder or benzonite clay if available)

¾ cup of baking soda or cornstarch

3 tbsp of dried ground herbs (ground rose petals, spearmint or lavender buds work best;; if not, use a small dash of cinnamon powder or cacao powder)

Essential oil in a scent of your choice

Directions

Place the powders and ground herbs in a bowl and mix well. Add around 50 drops of the essential oil slowly, mixing constantly to break up clumps and spread the fragrance throughout the mixture.

Store the mixture in a small jar or a clean, unused salt and pepper shaker and dust it on your skin for a pat of freshness during hot afternoons.

Tip: If you're worried about moisture getting into your homemade body powder, place a teaspoon of raw rice grains in the powder jar and shake well.
