Morgan Freeman was conferred The Chaplin Award at the 43rd Annual Chaplin Award Gala held at the Lincoln Center on April 25. Named after Charlie Chaplin, the award is given out by the Film Society of Lincoln Center to honour the remarkable talent and achievements of actors and directors throughout their careers. Previous recipients have included Robert Redford, Barbra Streisand, Tom Hanks and Francis Ford Coppola.

This year’s winner was described as “one of the most gifted actors of our time,” by Lesli Klainberg, Executive Director of the Film Society of Lincoln Center. “He is universally loved as an actor and as a humanitarian, and we are thrilled to add the Chaplin to the long list of distinguished awards he has already received.”

The Swiss watchmaker Jaeger-LeCoultre, which has  an expansive relationship with the filmmaking industry both onscreen and off, has been a partner for the Chaplin Awards since 2013. As part of their partnership, Film Society of Lincoln Center and Jaeger-LeCoultre launched the ‘Filmmaker in Residence’ programme, where every year, one artist will have the opportunity to focus on developing or refining new works in New York City. Additionally, the partnership also extends to the annual New York Film Festival.

Freeman, whose body of work includes the films ‘Driving Miss Daisy’, ‘The Shawshank Redemption’ and ‘Invictus’, won an Academy Award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role for ‘Million Dollar Baby.’ He can now add the Chaplin Award to his trophy cabinet, alongside a Golden Globe Award and a Screen Actors Guild Award.
