Titled Oh! Pardon Tu Dormais..., Jane Birkin's new album also features her first songs in the English language
Iconic British actress and singer-songwriter Jane Birkin, whose name inspired that famous Hermès bag, has announced the US release of her latest album, Oh! Pardon tu dormais..., which translates to Oh! Sorry you were sleeping.... The album is available on Spotify and Apple Music now.
It is an intimate album where she explores the themes of loss, love and life. She addresses the tragic 2013 death of her daughter, photographer Kate Barry, for the first time through the medium of music. She credits her producers, Étienne Daho and Jean-Louis Piérot for helping transpose her poems about Kate, Cigarettes and Ces murs épais, into two of the 13 songs on the album.

Birkin's musical career, which started with the infamous Je t'aime... Moi non plus back in 1969, has been closely intertwined with her late husband, Serge Gainsbourg. Since his death, she has paid tribute to him in many ways, from her 2017 orchestral album, Birkin/Gainsbourg: Le symphonique, to her performance of Elisa with Iggy Pop just last year. However, this album marks a turning point for Birkin as a songwriter emerging from the comfort of Gainsbourg's extensive catalogues as it features her first-ever English-language songs, Catch Me If You Can and Ghosts.
Interestingly, the release of this album has coincided with the increased visibility of her daughters, Charlotte Gainsbourg and Lou Doillon—the former stars in Netflix's hit series, Call My Agent, as a fictional version of herself, while the latter recently performed at Théâtre du Châtelet.
