It is the third and to date biggest vehicle to receive a touch of AMG magic, all of which, Mercedes hopes, will make its SUVs even more appealing to even more people.

The latest addition to Mercedes's new AMG Sport range of souped-up sedans and SUVs brings 367hp and a 0-100km/h time of just 5.7 seconds.

Those figures would be impressive if they related to a compact family hatchback but the GLE 450 AMG is 4.8 meters long, almost 2 meters wide and stands at 1.7 meters.

But as such it is the third and to date biggest vehicle to receive a touch of AMG magic, all of which, Mercedes hopes, will make its SUVs even more appealing to even more people.

"With our sports models we are making our sports car technology and the hallmark AMG driving experience accessible to new target groups," says Tobias Moers, CEO of Mercedes-AMG GmbH. "[It] is fulfilling our brand promise of Driving Performance in every respect."

To make more use of more of the power, more of the time, the car sits on AMG suspension, has a nine-speed automatic gearbox, permanent all-wheel drive that sends 60% of the power to the rear, and a dynamic steering system.

It can automatically adjust responsiveness based on the driving situation -- inner city maneuvering or a highway cruise -- while the damping can adjust the ride at each wheel individually and simultaneously to improve stability and iron out bumps and yawing.

The car is also heavy on driver assistance and creature comforts and comes with, among other things, adaptive braking and a crosswind assist system as standard.
