Whether you’re social distancing in response to the coronavirus or you’re simply looking for ways to spend quality time with loved ones abroad, a movie night or TV binge session might not be the first option to come to mind.

However, thanks to a new Google Chrome extension, movie nights from afar just got a whole lot easier. The new “Netflix Party” extension synchronises users’ video playback so you can stream the same movie or TV show on Netflix with loved ones in real time.

The best part? The extension also includes a group chat feature with emojis, screenshots, GIFs, and customised user profiles so you can share your commentary and reactions to the programmes as you watch them.

There are already over 500,000 people around the globe using Netflix Party to hang out with friends and host long distance movie nights—and for good reason. It’s free and requires very little set up. All you need to get started is a Google Chrome browser, a subscription to Netflix, and a few friends who are into the same movie genres as you. Here’s how to get started:

1. Install Netflix Party: Head to Netflix Party and install the extension directly from the website. Once you’re redirected to the Chrome Web Store, click “Add to Chrome.”
2. Open Your Choice of Program on Netflix: From there, go to Netflix and choose the movie or TV show you want to watch with friends—start playing the programme and pause it immediately.
3. Create Your Party: Click on the red “NP” icon next to the address bar, then click “Start Party” to get the party started. In order to invite friends, you just have to share the party URL.
4. Or, you can Join a Party: If you’re on the receiving end, click the party URL, which will redirect you to Netflix. Click the “NP” button next to the address bar and you’ll automatically enter into the viewing party with your loved ones.
