Space Furniture's New Bangsar Showroom Makes You Feel Right At Home
A multi-brand store is always a tricky proposition, particularly when the brands you carry are all heavyweights in their respective fields. Sydney-founded Space Furniture, leading retailer of luxury designer furniture in Malaysia since 2007 and Singapore since 2001, has honed the art of creating inspiring settings by WOHA in Singapore and VWBS in KL.
After eight years at Intermark, Space Malaysia has returned to its Bangsar roots with a new 4,000 sq ft showroom designed by award-winning Matthew Lim Associates (MLA). Leighton Clarke, group CEO of Space Furniture, explains: “Space showrooms have always set the bar for design retailing in the Asia Pacific region, if not the world. Working with renowned architects from each city, we aim to create interior environments which are inspirational, and create a completely new luxury experience for our clients, where they can feel at home and engage with the products.”
A departure from the traditional retail experience in Kuala Lumpur, the new showroom is set in an erstwhile fashion boutique with a distinctive Mock Tudor façade. The facade was painted white to emphasise the building’s iconic form and the interiors were peeled back to their original architectural elements while openings were created or expanded. This encourages natural light which washes through the interiors and draw you through each level.
“We really wanted to create the feeling of home and that came through in the detail. On the first floor, we have exposed the existing roof trusses and if you look at the overall interior now, there is a different floor level to define each of the zones,” says Matthew Lim, founder of MLA.
Poliform kitchens paired with the latest Generation 7000 built-in appliances from Miele and the B&B Italia furniture range come together on the ground floor and have direct access to a new patio area where Space’s outdoor collections are on display. Moving through the bungalow, the domestic scale frames an engaging experience which reveals such renowned brands as Moooi, Kartell, Giorgetti, Edra, Viccarbe, and Living Divani, the latter being the newest furniture group to join the retailer’s collections in Malaysia.
