The Malaysian government is proposing that electric vehicles (EVs) be fully exempted from tax, spelling good news for those looking to reduce their carbon footprints

If you care about the environment, the thought of switching to an electric vehicle (EV) may have crossed your mind. EVs are growing in popularity as they are not only better for the environment but also offer better handling, responsiveness and ride comfort. They have slowly but surely become more prominent in recent years, with more automakers offering all-electric alternatives that can drive longer distances, boasts speeds that match regular cars and, most importantly, offer a comfortable ride.

Here are four new electric cars in 2021 to put on your wishlist: 

BMW iX

BMW marks a new milestone with its first all-electric SUV developed from scratch. By all accounts, it is impressive. It has a driving distance of 630km on a single charge, delivering 385 kW of power and a highly efficient consumption of 19.8-23.0 kWh/100 km. Top speed is 200km/h and hits the century point in five second. Its recharge speed is equally astounding: up to 150km in just 10 minutes. So impressive is it that Forbes even declared that the BMW iX "will give Tesla's Model X some real competition."

Volvo XC40 Recharge

The Volvo XC40 Recharge is the Swedish automaker’s first full electric compact SUV that has been designed for modern urban living and beyond. One of the most impressive things about this EV is the strength shown by its twin electric motors and all-wheel drive, all with zero tailpipe emission.

The XC40 Recharge packs a 78kWh battery that can drive a distance of 418km on a single charge. It can also be charged from 0 to 80 per cent in just 40 minutes.

Even though it is an EV, the XC40 Recharge can achieve the century sprint in just 4.9 seconds. All said, the XC40 is a nice mixture of refinement, comfort and a driving experience that shouldn't disappoint.

Porsche Taycan Turbo S

Porsche is good at making fast, beautiful cars. So it comes to no surprise that they have done it again with their latest effort, the Taycan Turbo S. The new Taycan is the Stuttgart-based automaker’s first proper all-electric sports car, marking a new era for the brand.

On the outside, the EV features a distinctive front-end with vertical side intakes that lead to Matrix LED headlamps and a profile that is reminiscent of the Panamera. 

The new Taycan features an all-wheel drive setup with an electric motor that outputs 625PS and 1,050Nm of torque. It has a top speed of 260km/h and goes from zero to 100km/h in just 2.8 seconds. The Taycan’s battery supports up to 225kW of DC charging and boasts an EV range of up to 464km.

Tesla Model S

One of the landmark EVs to debut this year is the Tesla Model S. The latest car from the Palo Alto based company boasts a sportier appearance with aggressive haunches and a sleeker hood. Even the interior has received a major overhaul with a more futuristic cabin design and a U-shaped steering wheel. 

Beyond the looks, the Tesla Model S is powered by a robust electric power train. The Long Range variant that uses a dual motor all-wheel drive offers a top speed of 155mph (250km/h) and has an estimated 412mile (663km) range. It even goes from 0-60mph in just 3.1 seconds.

Mini Cooper SE

The Mini Cooper SE is the British automaker’s first all-electric offering that marks an evolutionary step forward, fusing the Mini’s iconic driving feel and design inside a zero emission vehicle. The EV model is instantly recognisable thanks to its distinctive bright yellow highlights on the closed radiator grille, side mirrors and alloy wheels.

It has a compact electric motor that outputs at 184hp and goes from  0-100km/h in 7.3 seconds. It packs a 32.6kWh battery pack and offers a driving range up to 234km. The latest EV from Mini also supports fast-charging, allowing it to get a full charge in just 1.4 hours. If you're in a hurry, a 36-minute charge gets it up from 0 - 80 per cent.
