While the pandemic has brought the Western pastime of drive-in cinemas to our doorstep, is an outdoor movie experience really for us, especially in this Malaysian weather?

What are your choices?

Currently there are two: The one in Kuala Lumpur is called Nescafe M-Junction Drive-In Cinema and is operated by TwoSpicy Entertainment Live and MD Events Asia. Located along Jalan Ampang, patrons' experience will also be complemented with a view of the KL skyline.

The only other alternative is located all the way up north in Ipoh, and it's called Casuarina Sini-Drive that accommodates up to 70 vehicles at one time.

Movie selections & showtimes

M-Junction is currently showing the recently released spy-thriller Legacy of Lies, along with fan-favourite The Greatest Showman. Movie-goers can choose between the 7pm slot or the second slot which is generally near 10pm, depending on the length of the first movie. The movies themselves will be shown on a 7x9 meter LED screen.

The Ipoh drive-in cinema caters towards local movie fans with screenings of Police Evo and Dukun on a 6x18m screen. Showtimes are 8pm and 10pm.

What are the SOPs?

Patrons to both drive-in cinemas will have to arrive at least 30 minutes earlier for temperature checks. You don't want have to wear a mask in the car but you need to put it on when you go to the washroom. Those who arrive in larger cars like an SUV will be directed to the back rows to avoid blocking the screen for patrons in smaller cars. And patrons are only allowed to leave their cars to go to the washroom.

The KL cinema only allows two patrons per car, while the Ipoh cinema admits one, two or four people per car.

M-Junction will provide two portable fans per car to encourage patrons to turn off their car engines; they will also provide every car a speaker. Meanwhile, patrons at Casuarina Sini can tune into a customised frequency on their cars to enjoy the movie.
