In case you missed it: K-pop royalties Blackpink makes an appearance at Buckingham Palace

Not only did Blackpink receive the royal treatment at Buckingham Palace when they attended a state banquet hosted by King Charles III on November 21 (during which he addressed them by name), in recognition of their work as advocates for the United Nations’s sustainable development goals, and as ambassadors of the COP26 climate change conference, the group also received the prestigious Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in a private ceremony, which was attended by South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol and his First Lady Kim Keon-hee.

2. Blackpink headlined Coachella

Blackpink became the first Asian act to headline at Coachella music festival in April 2023, where they entertained tens of thousands of festival-goers with a string of their top smash hits over two weekends—on April 15 and 22.

Matching the energy of their chart-topping songs, the girl group showcased their versatility with looks that ranged from bold to romantic. Throughout the shows, Blackpink tapped into trends like cut-outs, corset-inspired details and edgy leather boots for their Coachella looks. And their stage costumes shone a spotlight not only on Western labels like Mugler, but also on Asian designers such as South Korea’s Seo Seung-yeon.

3. Blackpink’s Born Pink World Tour

Blackpink’s Born Pink World Tour—which kicked off on October 15, 2022 and ended on September 17, 2023—spanned 34 cities in 22 countries across North America, Europe, Asia, and Oceania. The tour drew a total of 1.8 million people, making it the most-attended concert tour by a K-pop girl group ever. They also broke several venue-based records along the way, and on May 14, 2023, they set a new record for the highest attendance (50,000 people, no big deal) for a concert by a K-pop act in Singapore. And for their finale show, Blackpink became the first girl group to hold a solo concert at Seoul’s iconic Gocheok Sky Dome.

4. Blackpink beat BTS’s Suga and Twice

Thanks to the stupendous success of their Born Pink World Tour, Blackpink won the Top K-Pop Touring Artist award at the 2023 Billboard Music Awards on November 19, 2023. Their win not only beat out BTS’s Suga but also fellow South Korean girl band Twice.

5. Blackpink won at the MTV Video Music Awards

At the 2023 MTV Video Music Awards held on September 12 in New Jersey, Blackpink won Group of the Year, beating competition from K-pop acts such as NewJeans and Seventeen, and international artists like Jonas Brothers alike. Blackpink’s win carries historical significance, as they became the second all-female act ever to claim the award. The first girl group to achieve the honour was TLC, the American R&B trio from ’90s that was known as one of the best-selling girl groups of all time.
