The heiress and Netflix star leaves behind her son, Kenny Kemp

Billionaire heiress, philanthropist and Bling Empire star Anna Shay died on June 5. She was 62. According to a family statement, Shay died of a stroke.

“Anna taught us many life lessons on how not to take life too seriously and to enjoy the finer things. Her impact on our lives will be forever missed, but never forgotten,” the statement shares.

The Los Angeles socialite was born to an American businessman father, Edward Shay, and a Japanese-Russian mother, Ai Oizumi Shay. Her father was the founder of global defence contractor Pacific Architects and Engineers.

Following her father’s passing, in 1995, Shay’s brother Allen became the CEO of the company. In 2006, Shay and her brother sold the company and amassed a fortune.

Shay appeared on the popular Netflix series Bling Empire in 2021, which placed the spotlight on the luxurious lives of some of the most wealthy Asian Americans in Los Angeles. Alongside Shay, the series also featured Singaporean Kane Lim, Christine Chiu, Kim Lee and Kelly Mi Li. Shay quickly became a fan favourite, stealing the show with her savage comebacks, witty one-liners and life advice.

Shay captured our hearts in the first episode when we saw her dressed in a strapless red gown and diamonds as she took a sledgehammer and smashed the walls of her closet in her Beverly Hills mansion. During the interview, she explained that it was just her way of having fun. An icon, indeed.

2. “The only problem is [Kevin] has his own fashion sense. It’s not a good thing.”

At the start of the series, we see Shay’s first encounter with actor Kevin Kreider. During the interview, the fashionista continues to share what she really thought about Kreider’s outfit choices. “I think Kevin is funny, fun and everything opposite Andrew,” she says. Savage.

3. “Gossip to me is absolutely diabolical.”

One of Shay’s most iconic quotes in season 2 was during a dinner party where millionaire Kane Lim was gossiping about his friend Cherrie Chan, whose fiancé was rumoured to have another family. Shay quickly shut the conversation down. “Let’s pretend this conversation never took place,” Shay tells him. “Gossip to me is absolutely diabolical. Kane’s family has its own problems too. So I really honestly don’t know who he thinks he is to talk about people,” she continues.

4. “We made her invitation a little later than everybody else, so I didn’t have to deal with her the whole evening.”

Throughout the series, we witnessed an ongoing feud (that worsened with each episode) between Shay and her co-star Christine Chiu. We would see Chiu constantly comparing her luxury goods to Shay while pulling petty stunts at one of Shay’s many gatherings. In response, Shay returned the favour by sending her a dinner invitation that stated a later time than everybody else's.

5. “People who talk about sex are either the people who don’t have it or who are unhappy in it.”

After Chiu commented that Shay knew secrets in the bedroom because she was “old”, Shay casually rolled her eyes and said: “People who talk about sex are either the people who don’t have it or who are unhappy in it ... there’s no reason to be jealous.”

6. “At the end of the day, I don’t think I pick the jewellery, the jewellery picks me.”

Shay’s jewellery collection is impeccable, to say the least. Throughout the series, we see the star dressed in diamonds and luxurious jewellery pieces. In the first season, we see Shay and Cherie Chan shopping for Chan’s engagement ring. In the scene, Shay declares that the jewellery picks her and not the other way around—allowing her to feel connected to her pieces.

7. “Usually, they’ll say black tie, white tie, but there was no clue on this one. So we said… we’ll make our own. So I called Alexander McQueen and we went shopping.”

Prior to attending Kane Lim and Kelly Mi Li’s party, Shay shared in her behind-the-scenes interview that she created her own fashion look as the invitation didn’t have a dress code. Instead of personally picking her outfits, she called the team at Alexander McQueen and went shopping for custom looks.
