These five drivers are gearing up to show the need for speed at the Singapore Grand Prix

The visible excitement for the Formula 1 night race is certainly picking up speed as Singapore awaits the arrival of the best drivers in the world. Hailed as one of Singapore’s most thrilling events, the event will see the Marina Bay Street circuit brought to life, welcoming all things fast and furious. 

Formula 1 fans in Singapore are particularly ecstatic as a contract signed in 2022 saw the continuation of the night race for another seven years. Catch your favourite racing stars from September 15 to 17, 2023. The most exciting part of the races, apart from the entertainment line-up, is undoubtedly the drivers themselves. After all, the stars behind the wheel are what keep the race going. Already familiarised yourself with the grid? Here are five drivers to watch like a hawk during the Singapore Grand Prix.

1. Carlos Sainz

Scuderia Ferrari’s resident Spaniard Carlos Sainz is noted for his instinctiveness and intelligence on track, no doubt due to his racing blood. The son of double World Rally champion Carlos Sainz Sr., Sainz has definitely used this inheritance to greater heights, proving his talent and distinguishing himself from his father with his own unique racing style. 

Affectionately nicknamed “chilli”, Sainz always makes it spicy on the racetrack with his persistance behind the wheel. His energetic and aggressive driving style has since won him his maiden win at Silverstone in 2022.

2. Charles Leclerc

Making his Formula 1 debut in 2018, Monacan Charles Leclerc is a force to be reckoned with. Thrust into the world of motorsports as a child, Leclerc has steadily impressed with his stellar pace on the grid. 

Since joining Formula 1, Leclerc has evidently been a crowd favourite, possessing a strong record of qualifying on pole positions, attaining three wins, 11 podiums, and nine pole positions to date. 

3. Geroge Russell

British racing star George Russell has managed to stay on top form throughout his career, all thanks to his motto: “If in doubt, go flat out”. The bold Brit has been a force behind the wheel since his karting days, progressing through the series and earning him his Formula 1 rookie season in 2015.

Now driving for Mercedes, Russell’s instinctive driving form has aided him in earning his maiden win at the Sao Paulo Grand Prix in 2022. His grit on the track is not stopping anytime soon, as he takes the seventh position in driver rankings. We can only anticipate his performance at the Singapore Grand Prix. 

4. Max Verstappen

As the son of former F1 driver Jos Verstappen, you can bet that Max Verstappen has racing in his veins. Placed behind the wheel at a very young age, his prowess in motor sports saw him through a grand junior career in Formula 3. The Dutchman holds the title as the youngest driver to start a race at 17 years old in 2015. Since then, his fuel for racing has seen him through many highs, winning the 2016 Spanish Grand Prix at age 18, becoming the youngest and the first Dutch driver to win a race. 

Verstappen’s dominance on the track is evident, receiving praise from former Formula 1 driver Eddie Irvine, naming him “the most dominant team leader on the grid” in 2021.

The Red Bull driver is currently the forerunning favourite to win Formula 1 2023, already topping the podiums this season, including the most recent Hungarian Grand Prix. 

5. Fernando Alonso

If you’re new to the Formula 1 scene, Aston Martin’s Fernando Alonso is a name you must know. Breaking the records as Formula 1’s youngest pole sitter, race winner, world champion, and double world champion, Alonso is a certified racing legend. 

After returning to Formula 1 after two years away in 2021, his undisputed skills immediately scored him a spot back on the podium. Known for his speed, quick thinking and aggressive steering, watch and see who he leaves behind in the dust at the Singapore Grand Prix. 

6. Oscar Piastri

The youngest driver on the grid, Australian driver Oscar Piastri is described as possessing a fluid driving style. He has maintained a smooth and sharp cornering technique since his time in the Australian Grand Prix.

This talent of his has followed throughout Formula 4, where he went on to compete in bigger stages, becoming champion in Formula 3 and Formula 2 in 2020 and 2021 respectively. 

His consistency on the track caught the eye of two F1 teams, Alpine and McLaren. The latter emerged as the winner who could have Piastri behind their wheel. His Formula 1 debut has been steady: he recently finished fifth in the Hungarian Grand Prix.

7. Pierre Gasly

Frenchman Pierre Gasly swaps AlphaTauri white for Alpine black for the 2023 racing season. Dubbed the “flying Frenchman”, Gasly is the prime example of speed and grit on the track. Hailing from a motorsports family, he starting karting at the age of seven before making his way through several junior series, ultimately landing a spot in Formula 1 in 2013. 

Gasly’s Formula 1 career has proven challenging as he found himself in and out of a good performance on track from time to time. His determination has accompanied him well as has finished in the top 10 five times this 2023 season.

On track to finish in the top 10, fans are excited to see how the Frenchman fairs in the Singapore Grand Prix.

8. Daniel Ricciardo

Daniel Ricciardo made an anticipated return to the grid starting from the Hungarian Grand Prix on July 23. Affectionately known as the “honey badger” thanks to his laid-back nature off-track and aggression on-track, Ricciardo is quick on corners and is regarded as one of the most prominent names in Formula 1. 

Never to be underestimated on the track, his return to it after being off the grid for the start of the 2023 season has definitely been met with much buzz. He returns to Formula 1 in a third driver role for Red Bull, landing a seat with its sister squad, AlphaTauri.
