According to the Henley Passport Index, this year marks the first time six passports share the number one ranking

The Henley Passport Index, which ranks the world’s most powerful passports, has released its list for 2024.

Six passports take the top spot this year: Japan and Singapore—two countries that have consistently dominated the top of the Index in the last five years—share the number one ranking with France, Germany, Italy and Spain. Holders of these passports enjoy access to 194 countries without requiring a visa in advance.

Unchanged at 19th place is the Hong Kong passport, whose holders have visa-free entry to 171 countries.

At the bottom of the index is Afghanistan’s passport, which remains in that position despite gaining visa-free access to one additional country this year, bringing its total to 28. Interestingly, even North Korea’s rarely issued passport offer visa-free entry to 42 countries.

Meanwhile, Iceland, Latvia, Slovenia and Estonia have climbed to the top ten, bringing the total number of countries within this tier to 34—up from last year’s 30.

  5. Greece, Malta, Switzerland (190 countries)
  6. Australia, Czechia, New Zealand, Poland (189 countries)
  7. Canada, Hungary, United States (188 countries)
  8. Estonia, Lithuania (187 countries)
  9. Latvia, Slovakia, Slovenia (186 countries)
  10. Iceland (185 countries)
