In this Tatler exclusive and ahead of Sri Sri Ravi Shankar’s Art of Living event in Hong Kong on March 16 and 17, we caught up with the famous guru to talk about the power of breath and how miracles are all around us

Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, known more affectionately among his followers as Gurudev, is an Indian yoga guru and spiritual leader who rose to prominence as an apprentice under Maharishi Mahesh Yogi—the founder of Transcendental Meditation—in the 1970s.

In 1981, at just 25 years old, he founded the Art of Living foundation, through which his spiritual teachings have reached over 500 million people across 180 countries. On his Instagram account—where his two million followers enjoy his short, sharp and witty answers to life’s pressing questions such as  “is spirituality only for the rich?”, “how to get rid of the ego?” and “what is love?”—Gurudev says his “vision is a stress-free, violence-free world, and to see a smile on every face.”

Is the definition of happiness subjective, changing from person to person, or is there a simple, universal definition, and we are just over-complicating it?
Happiness is intrinsic to our being, our true nature, and it’s unbounded by the limitations of time or events. We do not require a reason or an occasion to be happy. But we surely need a reason to experience unhappiness.

While external events may offer fleeting happiness, true contentment is a state of mind, experienced in the present moment. The mind’s tendency to defer happiness, anticipating a better future, is futile; each new desire perpetuates this cycle of postponing happiness to a better tomorrow and prevents us from [being] in our natural state of joy.

It is through wisdom, an understanding of life in a broad context, that one can experience enduring happiness, unaffected by the ebb and flow of life’s circumstances.

What are some of the main reasons most people cannot achieve inner peace?
The primary obstacle preventing most people from attaining inner peace is their inability to be in the present moment, which is the gateway to a calm and tranquil state. The mind tends to fluctuate between dwelling on past regrets and worrying about the future.

Through practices such as meditation and Sudarshan Kriya, one can access their inner state of serenity and harmony with themselves and the world around them.

What is Sudarshan Kriya?
Sudarshan Kriya is a powerful rhythmic breathing technique. It incorporates specific natural rhythms of the breath, harmonising the body, mind and emotions. Sudarshan Kriya came into being in 1982 in Shimoga, India, when I went into a ten-day silence. During this period of silence, Sudarshan Kriya came to me like an inspiration. Nature knows what to give and when to give.

After I came out of the silence, I started teaching whatever I knew and people had great experiences. Millions of people from all walks of life have discovered that Sudarshan Kriya eliminates stress, fatigue and negative emotions such as anger and depression. [This leaves] the mind calm, clear and in the present moment, and the body invigorated and relaxed.

Can you walk us through the benefits of breath?
Breathing is the first act of life. Within it lies the unexplored secret of life. Breath is the link between the body and the mind. If the mind is a kite, the breath is the thread. The longer the thread, the higher the kite can go.

Awareness of breathing can unveil many mysteries. All our emotions are intricately linked to the rhythm of our breath. When experiencing anger or stress, one’s breathing quickens, whereas in moments of happiness and relaxation, the breath deepens. That’s why people are often advised to take deep breaths during moments of anger or panic. Deep breathing releases toxins/stress and cools down the mind. Our breath has the power to regulate emotions and thoughts, reduce anxiety, and alleviate stress. Proper breathing can play a crucial role in addressing mental health issues.

Breath is also the most important source of prana—the vital life-force energy. When the prana is in abundance, one feels healthy, alert and energetic. Breathing in certain rhythms can energise our entire system. Every inhalation brings in energy and every exhalation cleanses and relaxes the body. Ninety per cent of the toxins generated in the body are eliminated through breath. It’s important to harness the power of our breath to enhance health and vitality, and unlock the deeper states of consciousness.

In a busy city like Hong Kong, we are always coming into contact with other people’s energies. For those who are sensitive to such interactions, how can one protect their energy?
The universe is a play and display of energies, where each individual’s energy impacts those around them and is likewise influenced in return. That’s why it’s important to build a stress-free society. However, we needn’t be paranoid about getting affected by the energy of other people. Spiritual practices serve as shields against negative influences. Keep your energy levels high and vibes positive.

On the other hand, how can we be kinder to each other?
The golden rule of dealing with people is to refrain from doing unto others what you wouldn’t want done unto you. It’s a timeless principle that fosters harmony and compassion in all interactions. Also, it is essential to create some room for imperfections and mistakes as inevitable parts of human experience. This helps one cultivate humility, resilience, and a deeper understanding of ourselves and others.

Ancient Indian wisdom provides a beautiful formula for dealing with different kinds of people. Maintain friendships with happy and successful individuals, show compassion for the unhappy, harbour goodwill for the virtuous, and cultivate indifference towards those who engage in wrongdoing.

What is the connection between spiritual alignment and being successful in business?
Spirituality enhances intuition, creativity, inner strength, and resilience, all of which are vital for success in business. Intuition, which arises from a calm and centred mind, is an invaluable tool in decision-making, particularly when navigating uncertainties inherent in business ventures.

You speak fairly often about “miracles”. What is your definition of a miracle, and why should more people believe in them?
Yes, I do tell people that we should give miracles a chance to happen in life. Nobody’s life is devoid of miracles; rather it is our lack of belief in them that often obscures their presence. All the cultures and philosophies of the world acknowledge and thrive on miracles.

In an elevated state of being, the energy to attract becomes so strong that what one thinks to be impossible starts manifesting. When the heart and mind are pure and clear, positive energy naturally rises. But if the mind is scattered or filled with negativity, then no miracle is possible. A meditative, loving, expansive and prayerful mind makes every moment a miracle.
