From a concept store to an iconic French name

Celebrating its 60th anniversary this year, the name Diptyque is well known today as a purveyor of fine scents boasting an array of quality candles and perfumes. But did you know that its origin story diverges from the typical pursuit of a fragrance empire?

In fact, it can be considered one of the world’s first concept stores. Founded in 1961 by a trio of friends, interior designer Christiane Montadre-Gautrot, set designer Yves Coueslant, and painter Desmond Knox-Leet, their initial merchandise comprised fabrics of their design, eclectic discoveries from their worldwide journeys, as well as random knick-knacks, toys and tableware.

Take a trip to Paris with us to discover the journey of this enigmatic brand and how it became what it is today.
