Tan Sri Danny Tan founded Tropicana Corp (formerly known as Dijaya Corporation) in 1979. He is known in the property industry for pioneering the gated community and resort-style living concept with the luxurious 625-acre Tropicana Golf & Country Resort.

Tan started his entrepreneurial journey with his older brother Berjaya Corp Bhd’s Tan Sri Vincent Tan at his side, after struggling as an encyclopaedia salesman. After joining AIA to sell life insurance policies, the brothers started a reconditioned vehicle business. They subsequently got the dealership from Hino to sell heavy vehicles and machinery and in 1980, became Toyota and Proton car dealers.

The brothers next delved into property development and completed several property projects including condominiums, shophouse and mixed housing projects, before Tan decided to venture out on his own at age 35. He bought the Tropicana Golf and Country Resort land for RM60 million, and built his hugely successful and international award-winning development. After more than two decades at the helm, he had over 50 developments across Malaysia.

While initially retiring in 2015, Tan returned in 2019 as vice chairman. He is married to Puan Sri Ivy Tan and together they have five children. His son Dion Tan is Tropicana Corp’s group managing director.
