Datuk Seri Robert Tan is responsible for the renowned Mid Valley City in south-western Kuala Lumpur, and the rise of IGB Berhad to become one of the biggest property developers and companies in Malaysia.

With no initial intention of joining the family business, Tan initially went into manufacturing in Penang after returning from his studies and a working stint in the UK. Then his father, the chairman of IGB Datuk Tan Kim Yeow, fell ill and Tan junior was appointed joint managing director with his cousin Tan Boon Lee. He was actively involved in the design and development of the country’s largest mall, the Mid Valley MegaMall, and is largely credited for its position as one of the prime shopping hotspots in Klang Valley.

As luxury mall The Gardens, as well as The Gardens Hotel and Residences expanded the development, in addition to office buildings, Mid Valley City inevitably sealed IGB’s position as one of the top players in the property industry. Today, its impressive portfolio of projects ranges from retail spots, hotels and offices to residences in Asia, Australia, US and UK. This includes Mid Valley Southkey, the largest mega mall in Johor, the most southerly state of Malaysia.
