Kompassion

Thai   |   $ $ $ $   |   Petaling Jaya

Chef Kom’s passion for Thai food with a twist shows in the name of the restaurant and in his unique culinary creations.

SETTING

Nestled in the middle of a row of shop lots in the suburb of Damansara Kim, Kompassion is fairly easy to locate. After all, one can hardly miss the clear signage and glass windows of the restaurant. Contrasting textures and natural elements, bearing a mix of metals, wood and earth create a minimalist yet casual and comfy setting. Neatly arranged wood tables and simple chairs line the dining space.

FOOD

A starter of well-marinated bite-sized chicken wings is completely addictive, especially with the Thai chilli sauce dip. After that, crunchy, crackling pork skin with meltingly tender meat and the right proportion of fat features heavily in the double-cooked pork belly dish. Pair this rich dish with the deep-fried soft-shell crab to maximise on the crunch factor as the crispy on the outside and tender on the inside crabs are complemented with crunchy salad and ground peanuts.

The green curry crispy pork boasts of more crunchy-skinned goodness, even when cooked in a thick, creamy coconut milk gravy. But what’s a Thai dining experience without tom yum? Kompassion’s version comes with the option of choosing the level of spiciness, which range from Level 1 to 3. Though the soup looks deceivingly mild, the heat catches up very quickly after a few spoonsful. The morsels of prawns and fish fillet swimming within are fresh and tender.

Cool down from all the spice with the coconut gelato that comes with generous amounts of red rubies, jackfruit and crowned with basil seeds.

DRINKS

Kompassion serves an extensive range of drinks, from mocktails, teas and coffees to fruit juices and smoothies. The coconut smoothie and Thai iced coffee are ideal accompaniments to any meal here.

SERVICE

The waiters are well-versed with the menu and can ably recommend and elaborate on the dishes. Drinks are refilled promptly and used dishes are taken away or swiftly replaced without prompting.

PRICE

For the number of dishes, desserts and drinks ordered, the bill came to just RM280. This is reasonable, considering the portions served, quality of the dishes and the good service experienced. The restaurant is ideal for friends and family gatherings, especially with the menu that has a good number of dishes meant for sharing.
