Mercat Barcelona Gastrobar

Spanish   |   Bangsar

Spanish flair, extending over the ambience and its food and drinks, is found in spades in this lively and welcoming gastrobar.

SETTING

The restaurant is lodged between the bustling area of Bangsar’s most lively bars and restaurants. Quite a mix of crowds, but most of them comprise families and groups. The eccentric graffiti as well as decorations on the walls give the place a very quirky, welcoming yet cultural element to the atmosphere, and the upbeat Spanish music that plays in the background adds to the general cheerfulness. A fantastic display of the many kinds of gin they serve, set against a wall full of corks is one of the most interesting features here.

FOOD

A not-to-be-missed appetiser is the patatas bravas – mini bite-sized hot potato nuggets with a golden crispy exterior which melts in your mouth and contrasts wonderfully the light spicy tomato sauce and Catalan-style creamy allioli.

The half-rib Iberico ribs are ideal for family sharing (or for two very hungry people!), robust and heavily seasoned with turmeric and accompanied with garlic sauce. It’s a dish best enjoyed with the hands, so do not be shy to get your hands dirty. Another to-die-for plate is the paella arroz negro, a fantastic display of squid ink paella lavishly decorated with seafood. Whilst serving it, the staff mixes it all up for you, producing a powerful and mouth-watering aroma that stimulates the appetite.

A great way to end your meal is with the espuma de crema Catalana, a Spanish moulded custard dessert. Its smooth and light texture is complemented with a sweetness that is just nice. The dessert menu also shows a watermelon-based dessert infused with sangria for those seeking a bit of punch in their desserts.

DRINKS

Mercat is building a reputation for being one of the best places for gin, so naturally, that’s the superstar drink. One thing that really stood out was that the staff really know their stuff (food aside), but especially with gin, they would singlehandedly bring over the bottles that they have if you’re unsure of what type of gin you’d like to go for. They’d explain the types of gin, the bases and allow you to smell it. Based on what you prefer – fruity, smooth, or strong – they’d then thoughtfully concoct your gin and tonic according to your liking.

SERVICE

The staff are truly helpful, prompt and attentive. They are friendly and would advise on food options and portion sizes, and seemed happy to serve and further introduce guests to Mercat’s food and gin selection. Plates were replaced as soon as diners are done with a dish and glasses are never empty.

PRICE

The overall bill for two giant glasses of gin, an appetiser, a main course, paella and dessert was about RM328, which was fair, considering the portions. It may be a tad pricey, so perhaps patrons should be prepared to fork out about RM100 per person when they come. All in all, the restaurant is great for groups and sharing plates, has a lively atmosphere filled with laughter and great food. Again, the gin is one of the stars of the show here so definitely give that a go especially if you’re a gin aficionado yourself.
