Mosaic

International   |   $ $ $ $   |   Kuala Lumpur City Centre

Enjoy sumptuous spreads covering local and international cuisine in an elegant Peranakan setting with refreshing views overlooking KLCC park.

SETTING

Situated at the lobby level of the Mandarin Oriental Kuala Lumpur hotel, Mosaic is easily seen upon arriving at the hotel lobby. A large array of buffet spread greets you upon entering the restaurant. The elegant interior gives a sense of Peranakan feel to it.

Diners seem to consist of couples, business associates and some family groups. The set-up is spacious and gives sufficient space for diners and the right amount of privacy for conversations. Buffet meal seems to be a favourite amongst the diners. All in, it’s a great place for group dinners and catching up with friends.

FOOD

Open the account with a classic Caesar salad, where fresh and crunchy romaine lettuce is tossed with a classic (what else?) Caesar dressing. If seafood is your thing, then go for the baked blue swimmer crab cake – it is moist inside and baked to a perfectly tanned and crispy crust.

A must-order main dish is the herb roasted Atlantic cod fish. The cod is fresh and cooked just right, with a sweet corn ragout acting as a tasty wingman to the dish. Another notable main is the penne pesto, cooked al dente and accompanied with a lightly flavoured pesto sauce as well as topped with shaved cheese.

With a flashy name like MO chocolate bliss cake, you’d be forgiven if you had high expectations of it. But fulfil expectations this dessert manages to do, as the rich chocolate moist cake is truly blissful, possessing the right balance of cocoa sweetness and bitterness.

DRINKS

For a casual dining restaurant, the wine list of six red, six white and two champagne selections by the glass is an adequate range to choose from. As for wine by the bottles, there are 16 picks awaiting guests. The price of wines and champagnes by the glass range from RM50 to RM100, while the bottles go from RM200 to RM500.

SERVICE

Staff greet guests in a cheerfully inviting manner. Appetisers were served within 15 minutes. Service is efficient and staff are observed to be attentive towards guests’ needs and reacted promptly. They engaged in conversation with guests and occasionally checked on the orders.

PRICE

The bill for two came to about RM400, which seems reasonable given the location, quality of the food and service. Overall, it is a great place for gathering and sharing of food amongst family and friends. Buffet could be a good option as the variety seems extensive and alluring.
