Fathers – they’re the first true love of every little girl, and the bravest superheroes in the eyes of their little boys. The love for their children, in return, is conveyed in countless different ways, some with slapstick humour, mostly tender, and sometimes with a dash of tough love. The same can be said by our high society friends of their influential dads, in this collection of heartwarming bonding memories. In lieu of Father’s Day, prominent personalities share a surprise message of their treasured moment with dad that made them the young adults they are today.

“Playing polo together with my dad, Dato’ Beh Chun Chuan, with the determination to do the best whenever we can, and to set an example to the world that us Asians can reach world class level.”

“My special moment with my father Dato' Seri Phillip Siew was during my parents' visit when I first moved to Munich, Germany. My dad knew I had forgotten to take my umbrella to work one day and when it started raining, he stood by my workplace with an umbrella till I finished work -- and I had to work late that day.

Well, I think he is still doing that for me in different ways everyday.”

“My dad Tan Sri Lee Kim Yew is so special to me and there are so many stories that I can share. But perhaps a short one for now is -- Wherever he goes, either a construction site, a shopping mall, walking by the streets of KL to London, if he sees litter on the ground he would pick it up and throw it in the proper bin. His eco-consciousness has rubbed off on all my siblings and I.

My little 4 year-old does the same now and I think my dad is a wonderful role model.”

“The best memory of my dad Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir is doing activities such as paint balling, swimming, watching movies of TV heroes and just being a fun kid with him. He’s funny and his anecdotes are always interesting. He’ll never fail in making us all laugh!

The best memory of my grandfather Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad is sitting down and listening to all his stories. He’s just one-of-a-kind.

They’re both highly educational and entertaining.”

"The best memory of my dad Dato' Kevin Yong is when he comes up with a master plan to sneak durian into the house without my mum noticing as she hates the smell. We would eat so much Musang King over midnight conversations and smell out the whole house.

We now even have a fridge catered just for durian. Sorry, Mum, but that never fails to make me laugh."

“Back in 2004 my parents brought me to Melbourne for the first time - Not for a holiday but to ensure everything was in place for me to begin my next journey in life, at boarding school.

It was that very moment where my dad Dato' Richard Teo knew that ‘goodbye’ would be the hardest since we would be separated as a family for the first time. As he embraced me for that one last time, he began tearing up in in that moment, I felt a deep connection with him, it made me realise that this is what a father’s love is – I knew then that I had to try my best in everything I do, for him.”

“The best memory of my dad Fred Choo is when I was back in school and a few of my friends and I decided to go cycling with my mum and my dad around Damansara Heights. I vividly remember at one point, hearing my name being called “Mark, look at me, no hands” and when I looked behind me, he had both his hands up and waving in the air. This made my friends and I laugh until dad almost fell into a drain.

It's something I recall easily because those are the rare times when my dad has let his guard down from his everyday serious business façade and I get to see a side of him which I see in my brother Brian and myself, that is we all love to make people around us laugh or smile.”

“The best memory of my dad Dr. Lincoln Lee is when I was 11 years old and my mother told me I could not buy a bird. That same afternoon my father took me out grocery shopping and we came back with a pair of lovebirds. His rational was it wasn’t 'a bird', it was two.

To my wonderful father who’s always allowed me to get away with everything. Thank you for nurturing my cheekiness and the love for surprises.”
