The founder of Fave shares five ways to reflect on 2017 and find your purpose in life in the coming new year.

The recent winner of our Entrepreneur Par Excellence award at the Malaysia Tatler Ball 28th Anniversary Ball has come a long way since his days starting up Groupon. Since then, Joel Neoh has made a name for himself as an outstanding leader helming successful groups Groupon, KFit and now, Fave.

Aside from expanding Fave into new markets following his acquisition of Groupon, he has also paved the way for mobile payment to thrive in Malaysia through Favepay—a move that he believes is the future of tech in our region.

Besides driving his companies to new heights, Joel also counts the pursuit of happiness and those around him as his top priority. Here, the serial entrepreneur shares five pointers to delve deep into your psyche to find meaning and purpose in your life.

1. Reflect on the past. There are a lot of people that were a part of your past: your parents, friends, your colleagues and your cofounders. Look back and appreciate what has happened to you and the people who were with you. Only gratitude can put you in the right frame of mind to find meaning.

2. Know that the present moment is about hard work. Understand that everything that is good comes with effort, including meaning and purpose. That being said, it is important to not overthink things and enjoy what you do. Then, the meaning will come to you.

3. Have goals for the future. It is the future that inspires us. It motivates us, whether we are aiming for a family with kids or building a business that impacts others. A vision of the future keeps us moving forward.

4. Be selfless. Everything meaningful in life is driven by selfless actions, especially relationships. Innately, as a human, we always want more from those around us. If you are selfish, by default, you will be lonely and find no meaning in life. To counter that, you have to learn to be selfless and share with others, be it things or ideas.

5. Focus on values that define you, be it kindness, integrity or more. These are normally values that have transcended time and were passed on by our parents. You build on them, make them stronger and pass them on to others, or your children. And don’t focus on the wrong things that hinders you from a meaningful life! A lot of people focus on money and wealth but these are not values. Wealth is just an outcome of living your purpose, which is defined by your core values.
