The prince—two months shy of being a centenarian—was suffering from failing health and passed away peacefully at Windsor Castle

Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh and husband to Queen Elizabeth II has passed away at the age of 99. He would have turned 100 years old on June 10 this year. 

The prince had been suffering from prolonged health issues and had chosen to step away from his royal duties in 2017 as a result of this.

In February, the prince was admitted into the hospital after feeling unwell. Buckingham Palace had said that he was sent to King Edward VII Hospital in central London "as a precautionary measure".

He had been residing in Windsor Palace since.

On Friday night, however, Buckingham Palace released a statement saying: "It is with deep sorrow that Her Majesty The Queen has announced the death of her beloved husband, His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. His Royal Highness passed away peacefully this morning at Windsor Castle."

The announcement added that more information will be released in due course and that the official website would be unavailable while "appropriate changes are made."

Prince Philip who was the longest-serving royal consort in British history leaves behind four children, eight grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren.
