The language of romance is a very complex one. There are millions of songs written under the influence of love – even the animal kingdom banks on musical prowess to woo potential mates. Songs are a sentimental way to express your feelings, and are often treated as a code to remember a relationship by. For the month of romance, we got 7 lovers to share with us the intimate meaning of their ultimate love song, and compiled them into a romantic Spotify playlist for your listening pleasure.

1. Che Puan Sarimah Ibrahim & Tunku Jamie Nadzimuddin

“We have two songs – Firehouse’s ‘I Live My Life For You’ and Stephen Bishop’s ‘It Might Be You’.

We went to our first concert together when Firehouse played in Kuala Lumpur in 2014. It’s an amazing song with nice lyrics and we play it all the time in the car or on road trips. We also used it in our wedding video. The latter song is special because on our first karaoke date, Tunku Jamie sang it to me and we just love the song. We also both love the movie Tootsie from the 80s.”

2. Juvene Goh & Marcus Teo

Tatler Asia

“Our favorite song that best describes our relationship is ‘Sky Full of Stars’ by Coldplay & Hardwell.

It’s not your conventional love song but the tune describes us as a young modern couple in a dynamic relationship: Fun and full of ups and sometimes downs, represented in the song’s build up to the drop and calmness that follows after. The lyrics also represent our love for one another – ‘cause you’re a sky full of stars, cause you light up the path'.”

3. Nadia Nasimuddin & Hamzah Alang Azman

‘It’s your love’ by Tim McGraw and Faith Hill.

It’s the song we danced to during our wedding, and the lyrics are so relatable to us.”

4. Raja Jesrina Arshad & Joey Azman

Tatler Asia

“Our song is ‘Kiss Me’ by Ed Sheeran.

It holds dear to us, as it was the song Joey used to propose to me 3 years ago. Joey’s brother Aidil serenaded us with an acoustic version at our wedding, too.

The whole style and meaning of the song best describes the rawness and purity of our relationship. It’s nothing over the top or dramatic. Just a genuine expression of falling in love so fast and wanting to spend the rest of our lives together – pretty much our feelings since we first started dating 12 years ago!”

5. Jenn Low & Luke Elliot

Tatler Asia

“Ours is ‘Yellow’ by Coldplay.

We experienced it live in Singapore just last year. We were dancing and singing (or rather, screaming out loud) with our closest friends and their other halves. Moments like these are just that much more special when shared. But this year, 'If you’re happy and you know it clap your hands' is on repeat as it’s Olivia’s favourite song. We bet it will be played multiple times on Valentine’s Day!”

6. Jady Teoh & Brian Choo

Tatler Asia

“Our love song is 'Better Place' by Rachel Platten.

Brian and I had broken off from respective engagements. After walking away from that, we were both focused on our own life journeys till fate brought us together. From the very first date – the conversations, the way we made each other laugh and how comfortable we felt together – it felt like we'd known each other our whole lives.

This song perfectly represents our love. It was our wedding song that put tears to many. The music video too makes me rethink how the modern world takes love and relationship for granted due to our hectic schedules, and that love is as simple as looking into each other’s eyes.”

7. Tunku Elana Khyra, on a past long-distance relationship

Tatler Asia

“My love song is ‘Cheek to Cheek’, in both Fred Astaire and Frank Sinatra versions.

I heard the song for the first time while watching an old movie with my father. I loved how cheerful and upbeat the song was and would whistle it everywhere I went but it only became significant when I was in a long distance relationship. The lyrics go:

'Heaven, I’m in heaven
And my heart beats
So that I can hardly speak
And I seem to find
The happiness I seek
When we're out together
Dancing cheek to cheek'

I love how the song makes something seemingly small as dancing cheek-to-cheek sound like one of the world’s greatest joys. While the physical touch was something I missed in a past long distance relationship, it made me really appreciate each other’s presence that much more. It became our own little slice of heaven.”
