There’s more ways than quilted, military and bomber style to wear the fall staple. With the 2018 fashion week edition in progress, we took stock of how designers have made sensible outfit inspirations out of the year-end’s essential coat and jacket. Here’s an inkling of how you’ll be suiting in velvet, making a statement in utilitarian-style and getting experimental with clashing prints – just to name a few.

Pride of Britain

Fashion brands explore heritage further this season – British pride was a strong sentiment, with various appearances of tartan, the Union Jack, plaid and check throughout the fashion week capitals. Some were greys, while some were a flash of bold – either way, it proved to be a versatile vehicle for a myriad of looks.

Divided by print

In light of choosing sides in the current political diaspora, fashion brands have came up with an evocative statement trend – contrasting prints, for those who can’t make up their mind. Coats combine at least 2 different patterns, be it stripes, plaids and graphics that express times of uncertainty.

Long live Americana

Sports utility

Forget fancy material and intricate embellishment – utilitarian is a main theme, and it’s how sportswear is done this season. Think one-piece uniform styles and tracksuits, street-meets-activewear in these jackets that make the job of keeping warm, cool again.

Long live typography

Logomania lives on this season but has erupted into a medium for mottos and messages. Affirmations on change, political commentary and social injustice come in place of commercial typography, giving the wearer a sense of purpose especially handy in the cold hard season.

Velvet velour

A sense of rock and roll engulfs formalwear, with the use of plush velvet. Recent red carpet appearances have forecast the fabric to be a next big trend, and true enough, runways took to the lavish textile to dress up for fall/winter. Shades of brown, mustard and green were plenty, and bestowed this black tie piece a plush, versatile touch
