There are fringed skirts, dusty pastels, and lots of sheer fabric to look forward to in the season of new beginnings. Sexy, dreamy and artsy – we’re looking at a spring that’s more adventurous than the last, merging retro party appeal with practical minimalism, to a harmonious tune. These are the 6 key styles that are setting the 2018 fashion scene in motion.

1. Art Attracts

An ode to Picasso and his contemporaries were evident on numerous runways this season. Dior’s Maria Grazia Chiuri spearheaded feminine sensibilities by celebrating inspirational women in the arts with mythical Tarot Garden figures, while Paul Smith was inspired by the Hawaii paradise and pop art tuna ads. The Prada girl featured a bourgeois edge, in her military outfits splashed with pages of comic book print.

2. Sugary pastels

Spring’s prerequisite colour of pastel has a gelato tinge to it, with a bit of dusty hues too. Acne Studios coated patent leather and sequins in milky tones, while Emilia Wickstead’s ladylike dresses received a pretty treatment of hazy tones. Peter Pilotto’s choice of cool shades engulfed a fluid collection of pathwork stripes, silks and floral lace.

3. Fringe benefits

Fringe is back, endowing the season with a Fifties-like appeal. Calvin Klein played up colour blocking in flowing fringe dresses that brought to mind an American horror film-like essence. Jil Sander opened the show strong on fringe, demonstrated dangled over the physique to flow with the body's movement. Art deco was the theme for Salvatore Ferragamo, with a lineup invaded by fringed frocks of ruffled strands.

4. Parka pride

Fashion houses declared a weather forecast well ahead, along with a solution of the ever-charming, tough weather staple, the parka. With its cheerful amalgamation of colours and shapes, Anya Hindmarch suggested a grandma chic assembly. Chanel, of course, proposed clear plastic parkas lined with silver trimming to protect your Chanel tweed suit. At Marc Jacobs, parkas embraced its proportional versatility, as the finishing touch to contrasting ensembles.

5. Sheer decadence

This season wasn’t short on odes to the sheer and sexy. Fendi played with soft, transparent fabrics around a theme of Italian Futurism, layering structured botanical-print aesthetics over boxy patterns. Giorgio Armani embraced pops of candy jar colours, as patchwork beads on iridescent, weightless fabrics. Oscar de la Renta teased with see-through dresses, embroidered with splashes of flamboyant print.

6. Earn your stripes

Stripes came in all shapes and sizes, by which we mean thick, thin, vertical and horizontal – and that’s just a few. Givenchy took on a tone of Parisian streetwear, the nonchalant trimming on loose sweaters and dresses. Louis Vuitton adopted a cyborg, futuristic vibe with multi-sized stripes, while Missoni borrowed colours of the rainbow for its see-through, jersey bodysuits.
