The young actresses, and Clé de Peau Beauté ambassadors, are no strangers to the camera, having starred in major films such as ‘Twilight’, ‘Booksmart’ and ‘Charlie’s Angels’ respectively, and they tell Tatler Hong Kong all about their favourite on-set beauty tips and tricks

You often embrace the bare faced or “no make-up” look on social media—is it a conscious choice to show skin, or are you simply more comfortable that way?

Dakota Fanning (DF): I post those photos because I feel most beautiful when my look is natural. I think social media has done a lot of great things for beauty and sharing beauty tips, but it has also created a space for people to present inauthentic images of themselves, that in turn create criticism and false expectations. It’s important for people to remember that not everything they see on social media is real.

Your work must mean long hours and lots of makeup—how do you keep your skin in check when you’re busy?

DF: One tip I always abide by is to drink lots of water! I’m constantly hydrating. I also always wear sunscreen. I enjoy being in the sun, but I also know how damaging the sun and UV rays can be to my skin. I use the Clé de Peau UV Protective Cream to give my skin a natural glow while keeping it smooth and moisturized.

Diana Silvers (DS): Taking makeup off. When I'm working, I'm doing a lot more skin care, because if you’re working long hours and there’s retouching and adding more make-up throughout the day, so by the end of the day you have all this stuff on your face.

Ella Balinska (EB): I'm pretty low maintenance on set, to be honest. But one thing that’s non-negotiable is doing my skincare. Without fail, I always prep, and when taking make-up off, I’m being gentle. The way you take it off is so key. Your skin is an organ on the outside of your body, so it’s important to take care of it.

Which aspect of your beauty routine makes you feel most like yourself?

DF: I love make-up. I like experimenting but I usually go with a more natural, fresh look. When using makeup, I prefer to enhance my features rather than a complete transformation, so I gravitate towards rosy colors to complement my fair skin.

DS: I'm a very minimalistic person. My mom is European, and she was raised on blush and curling your eyelashes, so I was raised on blush and curling my eyelashes too. Because I don’t wear much make-up, skin care is the most important thing, and makes me feel the most like myself. SPF is important all year round, too.

EB: That applies for all my fellow darker complexion ladies out there! I used to think “Oh, melanin, it’s fine!” but it’s not, because that leads to my problem, which is hyperpigmentation, and I get all sort of different areas of my face looking tanned in different places. In terms of feeling my best, I have my little routine of things that work well for my skin, and when I get that right, it's a good day. I love Clé de Peau Beauté’s Softening Cleansing Foam in the morning, and then I’ll go in with The Serum—it’s miracle stuff—and finish with La Crème. It gives me an amazing base for whatever I'm doing throughout the day and helps me feel centred.

What’s been your favourite make-up look that you’ve worn on set?

DF: I loved my make-up when I played Cherie Currie in The Runaways. So much eye liner!

DS: I feel like my favourite look I've had thus far on camera was as Hope in Booksmart. Although it was very natural, whatever they did, I looked really good. I don’t even think they did anything [in particular] but the way they made me feel in the trailer, it was great.

EB: Charlie’s Angels. I have a love hate relationship with blood and gore—it's super when you first do it and you go for it, but then it's the three hours that you spend the next day in the chair trying to recreate it...

What’s the best skincare tip you’ve learned on set from other actors or make-up artists?

DF: I’m my own skincare guru! I know what works best for me. That’s also important to remember, you known your own face best. I start my routine with the Softening Cleansing Foam. It’s gentle and leaves my skin feeling soft and moisturized. Next, I use The Serum followed by the Hydro-Softening Lotion. I’ll finish with the Protective Fortifying Emulsion to nourish my skin. Turning skincare into a small everyday ritual is a gift to myself.

EB: I learned quite recently about putting the Hydro-Softening Lotion in a little atomiser and spraying it on my face as a refresher. You know when you put make-up on, and then you've lived in it for like an hour? This really kickstarts that process.

What’s been your relationship with Clé de Peau Beauté, and how do you feel about being an ambassador for the brand?

DF: I’ve always been a fan of Clé de Peau Beauté products and I share the brand’s belief about the importance of embracing and celebrating your unique and individual strengths.

EB: When I started in this industry, you go through that process of using different glam teams and the one product that was in everyone's kit bag was the Clé de Peau Concealer. It feels very full circle for me because Clé de Peau Beauté was present at the start of my journey, and now I get to continue my journey with them.

DS: One of my best friends and her mum used one of the Clé de Peau foundations, and I always thought it was so luxurious, but I couldn’t get it because I was a student at the time. It was so exciting, and very humbling, when Clé de Peau Beauté wanted me to be part of the family. When I started working with them, I learned more about the brand and team involved, and they are such wonderful, kind, welcoming and positive people. They make me feel so good about myself, and I love that they care about making the world a better place. They want to empower young women and girls, and they’re doing it [with the Power of Radiance program].
